Getting Started

By Bayard91, in X-Wing

Hello everyone.

I've been wanting to get started in this game for a long time, but after getting laid off from work I could spend any money on anything except for bills until I got another job that I could at least LIVE on and have a couple hundred left over.. Anyway!

I want to start an Imperial Fleet first. Obviously I would also get a Rebel fleet eventually so that I would have options for those days where everyone else only has their Imperial Fleet.

So my question is, which ships should I invest in first? I really want to get the Tie Interceptors just because they have always been my favorite class of ship in the movies and books.

I assume they would be good in the game too? But I was hoping I could get some advice from some Ace Veterans! ;)

Thank you!

Start off with 2 core sets, especially if you can pick them up at Target for $25 or less. Some stores have them that cheep, some still have them at full price. So shop around a bit, online and at Target and you should be able to pick up the two cores for around $50-60.

2 Cores are what I'd consider the minium you want, due to the extra dice, and such, Plus you'd end up with 4 TF's and 2 X's for way less then you could get them if you got the x-packs.

Then I'd say 1 Tie Advanced, and 3-4 TI's if you can find them. The TI's are still hard to find, so you might need to visit a couple stores, check Barnes and Nobel if you can't find them at your LGS.

Next would be 2-4 TF x-packs, 8 TF's is the most you can put in a 100 point list, but you want at least 1 or 2 for the pilot cards that come with the x-packs, that don't come with the core set.

So at that point you have 6-8 TF's, 1 TA, 3-4 TI's and that will let you make up a ton of lists using Imp ships. After that you'd want to consider 1 or 2 slave-1's.

There are a lot of option really, its all going to be people's personal preference. The real question is how much you want to invest initially.

If you don't have the starter box, I would get that first. Mainly because it has everything you need to play.

Second, check out the battle reports. Everyone pretty much posts what they played, what their opponents used.

I guess a good start for you would be the Box Set, 2 Interceptors and a Firespray(Slave-1). That right there should allow you to field the 100 points.

Wow I didn't think Target would carry that. Thanks. They carry it for about $20 cheaper than everywhere else I've seen it.

And I want to get a good amount of this stuff. I'm really into table top wargames. Have thousands invested (over the course of 10 years) into Warhammer Fantasy/40,000, Necromunda, Flames of War, and pretty soon I may try out Warmachine. I'm still a little iffy on Warmachine because of its art style.

If you want to get everything:

Imps

5 Ints

8 tie fighters

3 Firesprays

4 Tie adv

Rebels

4 x-Wings

4 Y-Wings

3 Falcons

5 A-Wings

Why do you need to get both factions? For the upgrade cards. I wanted to be just rebel player, but I had to buy imps for the upgrades. Now I fly both. Get 3 starters, cheapest way to to x-Wings and Tie fighters, I only have one x-Wing and Tie expansion. If you have $200-300 you can buy it all now, or do chunks, 1 of each at first.

I'd get one Tie expansion set right away since the unique pilots let you have more fun mixing up the abilities, so that and a single Tie Advanced for Darth would make a fun mini swarm, though I'm not sure whether putting the points there would be less competitive than the maxed out number of academy pilots. I've sure enjoyed flying that group of six though.

A single Firespray also gives you a lot of versatility in terms of getting up to 100 points and tactical options.

Interceptors are fun too if you can find them.

Thanks for the help everyone. :)

In the end, I can ask my FLGS to order some Interceptors for me. Easier for them considering they have the inside scoop with distributors. And I like to give them my business.

But I'll definitely be going to Target to get the core set for $30. May pick up two.

In the end, I can ask my FLGS to order some Interceptors for me.

FFG just shipped out a reprint of the wave 2 stuff, namely A-Wings and Tie Interceptors, but because they were in such demand, most LGS are likely to be sold out by now and may not be able to get any more in stock any time soon.

I went to a shop in Cincinnati, and they had 1 each on the shelf, the day after they were sent a shipment of the wave 2 ships...

It's taken me a few weeks to get the 3 Interceptors I currently have. Found one at a B&N, and got the last 2 in stock at Gamestop.com – they're around from time to time, but getting them is still tough.

Anyway, I've got a thread going with my findings as a fairly new player with similar interests: mostly Imperial, with lots of high-end Interceptor builds so far. Check it out, maybe it'll help you out. Or maybe you'll find my results are irrelevant if you're capable of rolling even a single evade icon on the green dice. ;)
