Asteroids and their Importance

By Wookie Hunter, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So if you are like me and like to play the tournament game with 100 points and 6 asteroids you may have noticed people just throwing them out there. I did too. Until today. My opponent placed asteroids in what I noticed against me. I placed one in the corner hoping to use it as a turn point and he placed his exactly 1 range from it thereby negating my plans. Now I played the game and noticed that there was only 2 good options for placing my ships due to the asteroids in the spaces they were in. Yet, his ships had three different places they could reasonably go. He moved slow and i jutted ahead and found myself in a funnel. What I mean is that my ships were all poring forth through 2 asteroids and some of my ships hit the asteroid and others were bumped into being on top of one hence negating his effectiveness that round. his ships split and started going from side to side shooting my ships as they went through the funnel and it wasnt nice.

So, the moral of this post is to pay attention to asteroid placement. Leave yourself options because a bad placement can easily put your own ships in danger. Try to leave paths you plan on taking while using them for cover. Ive got a lot to learn about it too so post your advice.

I think it was hothie who wrote an interesting thread on asteroid placement and about how your placement can influence their placement, specifically because people inadvertently like symetry

Can you provide a link? Hothie should do a video tutorial. I respect his opinion.

Welcome to Day 1. Placing asteroids is very tactical, you can break up that swarm, block movement, channel your enemy, etc..

I know there is a really good article on the BBG X-Wing forum about asteroid placement. In fact there are several there going over different things that are really good to read up on, even if you already know it. Refreshers are great.

Here's a great article by Theorist on the Team Covenant blogs: Winning Begins with an Asteroid .

Here's a link to a thread I hijacked about asteroids a while back:

Also something that I do with asteroids, especially when playing with Firesprays:

if you place one exactly 2 in from each edge in a corner, you can use it as a distance marker, like swimming. It's kind of like backstroking, where when you see the flag you know how far from the edge of the pool you are. If I know where range 2 from the edge is, I know where I have to be in order to perform a 3 koiogran turn while facing the edge of the board. I use it as sort of distance judgment to help in maneuvering close to the edge of the board. Also I like to place the big one right smack in the middle of the board so my opponent has to fly around it.

I guess I am a visual person as none of these articles made much sense to me. When playing the falcon crowd the middle when playing a swarm crowd their side with triangles. About all I got.

The proper expression is "METT-TC."

Ok guys this may sound stupid but what if you were able to put the asteroids in a diagonal line with two of them in the gaps . in order to break up any straight line And to offer cover if out gunned? seems like it would help break up swarms etc. how ever the set back might be you have to fly through them too. any thoughts?

I may have run across that once or twice somewhere... ;)

If you can get your opponent to help you complete the pattern, as per hothie's link above, then it's a great tactic. But I think it might be hard to pull off because the swarm will want to put two of their asteroids in their own corners so they can fly right past them (correct me if I'm wrong, swarm players).

I have gotten pretty good at placing asteroids to close direct (straight) lines to the enemy...but I forget to not do that when I have a big ship, and I get myself in trouble. On the other hand, at least I don't have all enemy guns on that one ship, so even if I lost it probably could have been worse.

No matter what miniatures game I play (and there are tons of them!), I always go for an appealing eye-candy battleground. But you can always use that appealing terrain tactically.
