Moving away from Core

By CommissarFeesh, in Android: Netrunner Deck Building

I could use some advice on my NBN deck. I've up until now only had a single Core set, and my deck (which performs pretty well, although would probably do better in more experienced hands) looks like this:

Deck Created with CardGameDB.com Android: Netrunner Deck Builder

Identity:
NBN: Making News (Core)

Total Cards: (49)

Agenda: (10)
AstroScript Pilot Program (Core) x2
Breaking News (Core) x2
Priority Requisition (Core) x3
Private Security Force (Core) x3

ICE: (15)
Data Raven (Core) x2
Enigma (Core) x2
Hunter (Core) x2
Matrix Analyzer (Core) x2
Tollbooth (Core) x2
Ice Wall (Core) x3 ■
Chum (Core) x2 ■

SanSan City Grid (Core) x1

Total Agenda Points: 21

Influence Values Totals -
Haas-Bioroid: 0
Jinteki: 8
NBN: 33
The Weyland Consortium: 6

Now I've got my hands on Future Proof, Cyber Exodus and What Lies ahead, along with most of a second Core set (as far as I can tell it's only missing Zaibatsu Loyalty and Corporate Troubleshooter ).

Obviously I want to include some of these new cards in the deck. Project Beale for sure, and probably Restructured Datapool (although I can see the argument for Priority Requisition , having another way to tag the Runner on my turn just seems more useful). Pop-up window HAS to go in somewhere (it's just too awesomely annoying, plus MONEY FOR ME). I'd also quite like Marked Accounts because of the high trash to go along with the drip (I've seen a lot of people suggest dropping Melange Mining Corp for it and running it with PAD Campaigns ). Flare seems nice but expensive.

So the question is: what would you include (OOF cards also) and what would you cut for them? Any advice very welcome :)

Depends on how you want to play your deck. You don't really have a specific theme going in the above deck. Almost like a hybrid of a Never Advance and a Psycho Fast Advance. You don't really have the number of assets and ICE required for the first and don't have the tag generation for the second.

What type of deck are you going with? What is your theme?

Regardless of deck type, 3 Astroscripts and 3 Project Beale are pretty much required as your agenda core.

Well, the above deck has done ok despite not focusing on one strategy or the other, but I think I'd like to go for psycho fast/over advancement in future, so tagging ahoy is gonna be needed. I guess dropping non-advanceable traps like Snare in favour of Junebugs/Ghost Branch/Aggressive Secretary would be the way forward then? Makes the bluff easier on an over-advanced Project Beale by giving me a reason to leave advanced cards unscored. Plus a third Ghost Branch is more tags.

Would a second SanSan be worth it? It seems it's kind of like a console; worth it for more draw but wasted once you have one in place. I guess at least with the Regions you can install both before choosing which to Rez.

What ICE would you change/add? And what would you lose to make room?

Disclaimer: I'm far from an expert deckbuilder, but I hope you can find some helpful thoughts in here anyhow.

3 Astroscript and 3 Beale are a must. A second Sansan is definitely worth it, because it increases the likelihood of you drawing it early, and it doesn't hurt to have a backup in case the first gets trashed. I've played with Restructured Datapool , but I'm not sure how I feel about it. Being able to initiate a trace on your turn is nice, but with the new operation Midseason Replacement , and a backup of a SEA Source or two you should have that covered, so Priority Req is ultimately more attractive, I think. Either way, 5/3 agendas are a tough fit, as Psychographics can take a while to set up and until then the 5/3 are awkward to score. So I'd probably drop the 5/3s altogether (and maybe one Private Security Force and fill up with a copy of Corporate War) . 4/2 agendas are more attractive because in a Sansan server you can score them in one turn with an Astroscript token, or if you have no Astroscript just put them down one turn with no advance and score them on the next turn.

Chum into Data Raven can be nice, but that's only gonna happen every so often, and aside from that Chum isn't doing all that much for you, so I'd probably cut it. Ice Wall is excellent and a keeper, but there's some additional Weyland Ice worth looking into: Shadow and Caduceus both work very well with NBN: Making News, and are additional income, though they do suffer a bit against the popular Mimic icebreaker. I love Pop-up Window , and I think 3 copies should slot in just fine. TMI is a bit hit-or-miss, so I probably wouln't put it in the deck unless you're hurting for more ice and don't have influence left. I'd probably replace the two copies of Hunter with two copies of Draco , which is a bit more flexible. I think dropping in at least 1 copy of Flare can be worth it -- it's hard to time, but the effect is really strong. Definitely not three copies, though.

Drip economy has been working well for me in NBN, so dropping the Melanges and replacing them with Marked Accounts is reasonable. Two Marked Accounts and three PAD Campaigns sounds good to me. In a fast advance deck, I really don't know about running ambush assets. To be fair, I've never used Ghost Branch , so I can't speak to its efficacy, but I'd consider dropping it. You ideally score your agendas in one turn anyhow, and Midseason Replacements and SEA Source should give you plenty of tagging capability (I'd start with two of each and then adjust later one as you see fit -- or perhaps just 3 Midseasons if you really want to go for the Psychographics / Beale combo). Your drip economy from your assets and your ice should be pretty strong, so you can probably drop the Beanstalk Royalties .

If you have any leftover influence, Ash 2X3ZB9CY could be a worthwhile upgrade to protect an agenda and/or your Sansan. Ichi 1.0 is a very attractive ice to include -- not too many will expect it, and it can be devestating then, and you can boost its lackluster trace more easily.

Thanks for the advice Sat, I've been poring over the deckbuilder now for a while trying to make my mind up on a few things. I'm torn between the horrific potential of Ichi 1.0 (I once ran into one on my last click with no Killer in play - that's a lesson learned the hard way) and the cheaper stopping power of Eli 1.0. Mainly because my deck is light on Barriers and heavy on Sentries already, which is why I was also considering TMI, but with the inf to spare it seems there are better options.

I still like the idea of running some advanceable ambushes, both as bluffs and for the occasions the runner does get caught by them. It might not work - I'll let you know how it turns out I guess.

Ash is a great idea, and potentially much better than the Red Herrings I had in previously. I know from experience how frustrating it is to be locked out of a server, and with recurring Trace creds, it should be pretty great in a Making News deck.

So, with your advice in mind, here is the as-yet untested:

One thought I have is that 15 ice seems a bit light. Eli 1.0 is a very solid ice, particularly for central server defense. I'd also drop the Matrix Analyzers and put in a third Data Raven instead and perhaps a third Tollbooth (it's an excellent ice unless the runner uses Femme Fatale on it). Anyhow, I think you want to end up with at least 18-20 ice.

If you need room, I think you can safely cut one Psychographics (it's a dead draw early on) and one copy of Ghost Branch. Dropping the two SEA Source and adding a third Midseason Replacement could free up another slot.

But you can play some games with the deck as is and then you probably have a better idea if you do need more ice, and which cards worked for you and which cards ended up not doing much.

Darren Tse from Netrunner for Beginners has put up a video in which he's building an NBN deck that I think is close to what you're looking for. There may be some cards in there that you don't have yet, but it should give you a nice starting point.

Thanks for that Sat, some good advice in there, and definitely some good options if my deck as-is doesn't work out so well. Really thinking about swapping Ichi for Eli again now; more ETR seems like it would be good, but I'm still gonna test first before making any changes.

Ok, three games against Gabe, first two I got creamed (not helped by him pulling Desperado on draw), third game I won. I concede that more ICE is needed. The ambushes so far have been situationally useful, but I'm sure the deck would work with less/none.

As it stands, I'm looking at either swapping 2x Ghost Branch for 2x Eli 1.0, or 2x Project Junebug for 2x Caduceus. I'd like the extra cash Caduceus would bring in, but I'm already pretty sentry-heavy. Don't have the influence for both and I'd still like to keep some ambush ability. Currently leaning more towards Eli, what do people think?

There's little shame in getting creamed by Gabe (or Criminals in general).

My thoughts: Drop the two Ghost Branch and the two Junebug and add two Aggressive Secretary -- it's hard to slow-play a Junebug in a fast advance deck, because you'd never advance it enough to do any real damage. Even a once-advanced Agressive Secretary on the other hand can slow down a runner significantly (especially Crims who are usually light on recursion and like to include one-of's). Drop one Ichi , add one Rototurret . Add two Eli 1.0 . Swap the Matrix Analyzer for two Enigma for more protective early game ice. If I counted right that should put you at 15 influence.

Thanks again for the advice there Sat - funnily enough I was going through my deck yesterday and asking myself what the Matrix Analysers are really doing for me. Sure, it's nice to get an out-of turn advancement for a remote or an Ice Wall, but it doesn't happen often enough. I'll have a tinker with your suggestions and let you know how it goes :)

Well, first reports are in. Found myself having a REALLY rough time, primarily down to the fact I'd somehow overlooked the 2nd Eli 1.0 (I was actually running around with only 48 cards :S ). On reflection, I've made the following changes:

Corporate War our, Restructured Datapool in (this'll likely be swapped for Character Assassination when released)

Ichi out and 1 x Psychographics out, 2 x Rototurrets in.

Performed better, more ETR proved immeasurably useful, actually won with very few fast-advance tricks. Needs more testing, as this may prove to be a weird data-point, but I'm preferring it so far.
