Descent - Cities and Sewers

By Bayushiseni, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I don't know if this idea already surfaced here. If it has, I'm sorry if I'm duplicating it.

I love Descent - 2nd Edition.

I would love to see a big expansion that deals with city adventures (roads, houses, bars, blacksmiths, inns, city bandits, robbers, city mitilia, etc.) and sewers beneath the city (giant rats, wererats, sewer monsters in general).

I think that it would give a new dimension to Descent and create the potencial for new and different adventures.

I think I see a pattern. I could be wrong, but... In SR you had all of these LT and a glimps on their stories. In LoR you have only two LT from SR talked about. Since Splig and Malric are star players in LoR, I think this next one with feture Balther and Eliza. Honestly, I think Eliza would work very well with a city theme. Bring in some urben legend like things with her, like warewolves (or dire wolves would be awesome!) and vampires.

I don't know abour Belther. He makes for an intresting LT that likes to play both sides. Maybe that would work in a city as well.

With cities comes the ablity to have more NPCs to work with. More paniced villagers! (There are thoughs in the first quest of LoR) >D I really liked how that worked out.

Absolutely love that idea and I feel it's what is missing from a game like this.

I would love a city/sewer theme! Although it'd be nice to see Lady Eliza again (or the other LTs that weren't in LoR), I'd like for them to focus on creating new LTs, or bringing the other 1st edition lieutenants (Siren, Thaad, Gata, Sweetheart, etc) to the second edition game. It gets kind of stale having the same LTs with the same abilities in more than one campaign. It'd be nice to have brand new villains each campaign.

I kind of disagree. I LOVE stories. Maybe a little too much. It was really great reading through LoR to see Splig and Merrick fleshed out a little more. Matter of fact I kind of feel for Merrick. I would like to hear everyone's story. But I agree. I would like to see more characters come to light as well. As the ever greedy OL, new abilities are always wanted/needed/welcome >}

Thanks for your kind answers.

I really like the idea of fleshing out the lieutenants, but I do really like the possibility of new scenarios, enough tiles to create a complete world. And cities and sewers are really a must, in my oppinion.

The Farrows, at least, have been a recurring part of the Terrinoth universe even since before D1E came out. I have little doubt that we'll be seeing more of them, at least, in future expansions. Splig seems to be popular, but him and Belthir I could take or leave as recurring characters. I guess we'll see what FFG has in mind.

I definitely do want to see new LTs, maybe even new recurring LTs, get introduced to the game world as time goes on. I'd love to see some of the other RtL LTs resurface in due time. The SoB LTs I'm less attached to.

As far as the city/sewer theme, it sounds like a cool idea to me. I know it has been raised before in D1E as a potential expansion idea, but I don't think it's been mentioned for D2E before now. They could really get into fleshing out one or more of the Free Cities with an expansion like that.

Forgive the noob... What is RtL?

I do know there is one (only one) sewer tile ATM. Hmmm... need more. And the sewer we have is really pretty. Well... all the tiles are really pretty ^.^;; hehe.

I like Belthir's concept. You can do allot with a character that plays both sides. You have a city, why not a hovel like town with his kind hiding out? We know from LotW that hybrids like him are all but gone after the Dragon War.

They have left so much of the story open ended. There is so much more room to grow.

D1 expansion, that introduced campaign mode for the first time. Road to the Legends.

That town theme opening realy many new ideas. Like miniquests in town before you venture on adventure. Searching in town for betrayer and many more. I have an idea, about buying barricades from trader what block line of sight, its not passable and can be destroyable.

Cities have always been one of the best places for adventures.

A new action - questioning - could be added to the Heroes arsenal.

It would give a boost to the rumour mechanism.

And common bandits could be easily added to the universe.

Maybe the braking/steeling of search tokens for the OL could make it so he can buy rumor cards? Maybe steel equipment at a discount for his own LT? Or may just steel them so the heroes can't have them. hehe maybe I am being over zealous.

@Kunzite: No. Not over zealous. But adding these little tricks to the OL will give it more character and the inclination to bond better with this tragic figure. The OL is alone and doesn't have the shinning things the Heroes have, so it can always have more choices. I think.

Guys I have a question, why isnt in Descent any traps ? Only trap cards ? I cant imagine a dungeon without deadly traps

I like the way cards work. I thnk that a little more variety would help.

Traps are represented by Overlord cards so that they can pop up anywhere. Since the entire map is public knowledge, it would be too easy to avoid traps that are printed on the map.

D1E did have rolling boulders and crushing walls that stayed on the map after they made their appearance, but they were really only used in the expansions that introducced them. I'd love to see boulders come back in D2E, but only as a card that can be implemented in any quest. Crushing walls were awkward at best. I wouldn't complain about them coming back, but I'm not anxious for them either.

Hmm, a city expansion that could be interesting.

Anfd traps, i hope that some of the old traps like crushing wall or boulders will come back in this edition. I always liked them.

I believe that the expansions developement will quite naturally include variety.

I would not only like to see urban environement, but jungle (or deep forest), desert or high mountain peaks environement.

As with 1st ed. a "sea faring" expansion could be nice.

It seems that 2nd edition is having quite a lot of success - seeing the speed of expansions coming out - so I am looking forward to seeing good surprises occur in the future.

One nice addition could also be a solo - totally cooperative system (with an "AI" OL that could be included in all modules - or just with specially adapted quests and campaigns).

I think that a sol system can easily being done. To all campaigns. And it would be a good bet.

I also would like other environements, but cities is the most useful now IMHO.

Hmm a cooperative mode that would allow to play against the game would be amazing.

The GenCon is only few days away, I wonder will we see only Trollfens there or maybe something that will come after it. I hope that they will also show the leutnants minis and announce something for this game there.

There are already some good experimental rules in Boargamegeek to play solo and cooperative.

And you can change them to your preference of play as I did.

But official rules with a different set of cards for the OL would be very nice. (hint, hint)...

Official rules for cooperative play would be a nice addition to the game.
