Hyperspace Travel Times

By Wookie Hunter, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Maybe I just can not for the life of me find it, or maybe it isn't here, but what are the base times for a hyperspace jump. I know I know you're gonna say it has chart 7-14 Hyperspace Travel Times. But one to three weeks is a huge amount of time disparity. Based on the astrogation roll, how do you know if it is one or three weeks to travel. It does not say what even happens if you fail the astrogation check,to my belief. Please help as my players want a good answer.

This was discussed somewhere else too. Here. A straight up Failure, no threats, despair, advantages or triumphs could mean one of two things from the top of my head (many others if you consider it further I'm sure): 1) you put in wrong coordinates and you end up somewhere else (perhaps not far away from intended target location?) or 2) your hyperdrive won't activate due to: syntax error or something along those lines.

As for time. Look up the map in the corebook, and consider distance within the parameters of table 7-14 and make a ruling that fits your game.

Or just look in that thread I linked to. More options and thoughts there.

You may want to build yourself an "astrogation gazetteer", or borrow one from another edition...

Since they took away tables, pardon the code tags...

	AA	BB	CC	DD	EE
FF	49.0	84.5	36.8	18.0	27.2
EE	14.4	42.9	22.4	8.4
DD	17	24.3	1.2
CC	6	22.0
BB	8.0

Replace the letters with names. This one was totally random, and generated using a spreadsheet...
I randomly assigned XYZ coordinates, used the hypotenuse formula ( d=((X a -X b ) 2 + (Y a -Y b ) 2 + (Z a -Z b ) 2 ) 0.5 , and then multiplied by the sum of two random fractions. FF is WAY out there... I set its bounds way higher.

This process provides an easy gazetteer generation for worlds you add; extant worlds are best added by your own decision. Note that a x1 hyperdrive can cross the galaxy (probably 40kPc across, and 0.3kPc thick) in a surprisingly short time... 20 days or so, before accounting for local hazards...

Here's one at Wookiepedia: Astrogation_gazetteer.jpg

I am just using 1 day of travel time per square on the map multiplied by hyperdrive class. Threats add to the base number (so 2 threats makes a 3 square trip equal to the time for a 5 square trip).

I acounted for the gridlines to approximate a week, however this was purely fiat on my part. My crew started with a .5 HD upgrade, so it's not really that important for them, but when hauling back a certain damaged light freighter it's calss 12 turned a 20 hour trip(10 for the Grundle ) into a 240 hour trip. Doable, but not unthinkable.

Hyperdrives in my games allow all ships to travel at the speed of plot. :)
