Have You Tried A Jedi Yet?

By Zev Linare, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm really curious as to how they've played out in games thus far. Part of me really wants to test one out but I fear I'd have to run a campaign about Jedi survivors after Order 66 to do so, and have all the characters be Jedi.

So in your experience, how well does the Force and lightsabers seem to work?

As of yet there is only a non-functioning glowstick in one of my players' hands. She might figure out how to fix it soon though. As for force powers. She only has the Sense power, which works great! She doesn't have it completely upgraded, she has the first ongoing effect and the a range upgrade for reading surface emotions/thoughts.

I used one as an NPC. The mechanics are decent. There needs to be at least a Force Healing/Harming tree to do what I expect for a full jedi... And that's not counting the Emperor's Hand I used as an adversary. (My players proved that, if you stat it out, PC's will eventually kill it.)

Lightsabers are BLOODY dangerous. And when one adds some form of blaster bolt deflection, OUCH. (I used 1 upgrade per force locked.)

I've done stress tests using lightsabers, Force powers, and some homebrew Force-sensitive specializations.

Lightsabers are an incredibly powerful weapon, particularly if facing off against minion groups, since the attacker will be taking down about 2 to 3 minions per attack (2 from damage courtesy of Breach 1 pretty much ignoring Soak, an additional from triggering a Critical). In the hands of an NPC, odds are the party is going to be in trouble unless they've got a someone on their side with a lot of defensive talents/abilities to tie up the 'saber wielder.

Force powers are also powerful... once you've spent the XP to purchase the various Upgrades and increase your Force Rating from a 1 to a 2 (possibly 3 if using any of the homebrew Force specializations out there such as Jedi careers). It's expensive, but the Force-user does become quite powerful, especially where Move is concerned.

I read the title as, "Have You Tried a Jedi Yeti?" That sounded like some awesome/horrible EU crazyness. Sorry, continue.

I personally think it is far too soon to be trying to play a Jedi. There are no rules for it yet, all EotE gives you is rules for force sensitive characters who can advance to become Jedi in the F&D book. It also sort of gives you ways to wield a light sabre, just not effectively.

I'm having my group enjoy the game as is at the moment, none of them have bothered with the force sensitive trees yet as I have made it explicit that I will not be house ruling Jedi in any shape or form until F&D. The one time they did get a Light sabre they had to present it as proof to an Imperial Officer that they had killed a renegade Jedi for a rather handsome amount of credits.

They did try and bluff their way into keeping it of course, but it wasn't really possible as the Imperial Officer would have happily placed a huge bounty on their heads or simply shot down their naff space ship with the numerous Imperial Star Destroyers orbiting the planet.

Honestly, though I was a bit harsh on preventing Jedi in the campaign, they're enjoying the hell out of their Bothan/Wookie alliance.
