Brand new to the game!

By Dracu1a, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I am new to this game, wanted to get into this game (with my girlfriend) as we both love the show and thought this game would be fun.

Did some reading and noticed that this game used to be a Collectible Card Game and now it is a Living Card Game. Can you use the CCG cards in the decks of the LCG?

Does anyone play the CCG game any longer?

Thank you all for your help!

-Chris

You can not use the ccg cards in the lcg and i have not seen anyone play the old ccg.

welcome to the game i am sure you are gone have lots of fun.

As you found out, the game used to be a CCG. Very few players still play the CCG format, although there's the occasional booster draft or "cube draft" that pops up every now and then at a big event. The cards from the CCG mostly work with the LCG cards just fine for private use, but in organized play you can only use CCG cards that have an identical reprint in the LCG format.

Thank you both for responding! I noticed some other website indicated that you can use the CCG cards as long as they were identical to the reprint.

Thank you, both, again!

The CCG and LCG have substantially the same rules. Because the rules are substantially the same, when you play the LCG, you pretty much are playing the CCG.

So, although the game was updated a little bit for the LCG, CCG and LCG cards can be mixed in the same decks and played together without any difficulty from a rules point of view.

That said, the development of the LCG cards has evolved over the last 5(?) years from the CCG. As such, there are cards and effects that were well balanced in the CCG card environment that would be vastly over-powered (or laughably underpowered) in the LCG environment, and vice-versa. Because of this, FFG has ruled that CCG cards are not allowed to be used in LCG tournaments or other sponsored events unless they have been reprinted directly, word-for-word, in the LCG environment.

The end result of all of this is:

1. CCG and LCG cards can be freely mixed in non-competitive decks.

2. Competitive decks cannot use CCG cards at all, unless those cards have been reprinted, word-for-word, in the LCG.

3. Due to simple availability and the excitement of the still growing and evolving play environment, most people these days (that we hear about on the discussion boards, anyway) tend to follow the "competitive" rules and don't mix the cards, rather than limiting themselves to the 5(?)-year-old, fixed CCG card pool.
