I am a curious noob!

By BlueShy, in UFS General Discussion

So I just came across this game a few nights ago with a friend. We were instantly drawn in because we are obsesed with all fighting games (guilty gear, street fighter, king of fighters, etc.) But we were wondering, How is the community, is there a decently large player base?

We both bought starting decks online (Ken and Terry) Are they any good? We still dont know the rules, so i wont ask any questions about deck mixing.

Please note, there are two Ken starter decks, so we can't say. The newer Ken one has a very strong attack, while the older Ken one has an errated ability that remains quite strong.

As far as the Terry deck is concerned, his foundation, Deadly Rage, is sneaky, but can be effective, and Buster Wolf is one of the strongest Character Onlys in the game right now, even though rotation is generally far more played than Legacy, which is where that Terry starter is right now. It is still a great deck to learn the game, don't get me wrong.

Also, the community is VERY passionate about this game. Discussions may get heated, but everyone loves it dearly, and many people remain in the game because of the community after they've moved on.

Thats awesom. I think i got the "Domination" Ken. Would you say a lot of people play this game? I read that it was for the more experienced players (i used to play magic before it got lame)

It depends on what you define as large / a lot.

The game is currently in a major growth phase. The previous year where the game transitioned between compaines was a little rough, as players sat back waiting to see where the game is going. Now that things are full steam ahead, and the new base set is launching in a matter of weeks, there are a lot of excited folks like yourself jumping onboard, as well as many old players returning to the game.

Yesterday I had 8 new players show up to our 3rd anniversary event.

So there is a dedicated following to the game that is growing. Whether or not you define it as large, that's up to you.

I wouldn't say magic got lame. it's certainly getting there though and I may well pick up this game again.

it's not so much for experienced players as players who understand how to build a deck around a theme while paying attention to every individual card IMO.

I knew someone who quit cos every deck he ever built had control check problems yet I have no problem with this and for me it is the most appealing part of the game. depends who you are really but it's certainly less of a catch all card game than most.

Right, what this game lacks is the Sliver problem. In MtG recently, the designers throw you major bones with Elf, Saproling, Slivers, Undead and so on. Pretty much those decks make themselves. In UFS this seldom happens, and the best decks have no such obvious theme.

Here is a few reasons why the game doesn't have a humongous playerbase:

1.) It is not based on the most recent Adult Swim cartoon (*cough* naruto and such)
2.) It is not sold at walmart (cause to do so would mean that you support the destruction of the gamign store = the destruction of TCG diversity and then soon everyone is playing pokemon TCG)
3.) It's game play is unlike most other popular TCGs. Its not a monsters vs monsters game and that throws people off at first.
4.) It has a 'random' aspect to it that makes people think the game is more luck than it is = the control check. This is evened out by having more cards in hand per turn, and also having your foundations work to counteract that. But it also requires a game play that is less 'known' than other TCGs and that requires accessing your risks in a given turn, and prevent yourself from over extending... which causes a lot of people problems...

Ya I just ordered a ken deck because i wanted to get into ufs...before that all i played was yu-gi-oh, but got tired of it. Actually it was ufs's complexity compared to yu-gi-oh that made me wanna try it. What kinda sucks though is that i can't find any card stores around that sell ufs cards. Anyone know any particularly good sites for buying cards? (not expensive and cheap shipping to canada)

i use coolstuffinc.com. they have a good amount of singles for sale too and are constantly restocking

Where do you live? Might be there is a base nearby? ... or not.

Again, there are reasons why thsi game isn't carried at stores... Not being one of the big three, not being a cartoon possessing TCG, having a slightly higher learning curve (or at least, being completely unlike any other tcg throws people off) etc...

Whenever you post on these forums or forums like these, its always good to say where you're from Maybe WE know where you can get some hook up? AFAIK calgary still plays...
