Organized Play / Living Campaign?

By WarrenH, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I know I haven't heard anything about any kind of official Living Campaign. Does anyone know if this is in the works?

If it isn't in the works, are there fans out there ambitious enough to pull off an unofficial living campaign?

Assuming there were a living campaign (official or otherwise) what would want from it? What aspects of other living games were important to you? What can we do better with EOTE?

Assuming you are interested in the concept, would you be willing/able to write a module?

For those of us who are new to this, could you explain what a Living Campaign is?

A living campaign is basically a shared campaign with a codified set of rules. The general idea is that you can play the same character with many different groups. Because the rules and advancement is codified, you don't have to re-roll a character every time you play with a new group of people.

Wikipedia has a very good article about the Living Campaign Concept. Star Wars d20 had the Living Force campaign which I believe was fairly popular.

That sounds great!

The Idea of playing a different character every time you play with a different group is not appealing...

WotC did a living campaign for their version of the Star Wars RPG, called Living Force. It was quite successful, and had both a good following and special scenarios designed for it.

While I love the idea FFG has not supported efforts for this sort of thing in the past (it takes staff and expense that is significant) when we talked about similar ideas for Dark Heresy and WFRP.

To do it with a fan-based effort is a very serious undertaking that will be a part-time job for someone (our Dark Heresy effort fell short for lack of this). It's rare to find a few folks that can commit to 20 hours of their week to supporting this kind of thing that also have the organizational and writing skills to pull it off.

It can be done, it's just challenging.

I think one of the challenges for such an undertaking would be to make sure that there are one year's worth of scenarios ready to go before the first one is released. SWRPGNetwork tried something like this about ten years ago and it ran out of steam, in part I believe because they had an adventure or two ready, but started releasing them too early. When the third scenario stalled, it brought the whole project to a standstill.

It is possible that this could be something handled by Lone Wolf's "Realmworks" once it gets up and operational later this year. Collective shared campaign info could easily be integrated into it, and dynamics I think can be tracked. It's into Beta test now, so I'm going to keep an eye out for it...
