Okay, so it says on page 227 for sensors to use the Surveillance skill - which was, of course removed during beta. Fine, but it doesn't say what you SHOULD use for sensors. So just what does one use for operating sensors?
So how does one use ship sensors, anyway?
Perception? The sensors provide you with senses beyond your usual range, but getting the most from that information is based on Cunning/Perception.
Beta Final Update shows Scan the Enemy using Perception.
I could see Computers being used as well.
I would absolutely agree that computers would be the way to go. If you are sitting staring intently at a monitor I don't think it would make sense to use perception to read what the monitor displays. You would be using the ships (perception) sensors and extrapolating data about object size, relative position, speed, transponder pings, etc to determine information about your surroundings. All of which is done with a computer.
Edited by Hungry DonnerExactly. Plus, I recall them saying that they got rid of Surveillance because it could be equally done between Perception AND Computers, not JUST Perception.
I'd go with Computers for using ship-based scanners rather than Perception. You can still use Perception in vehicle scale, you're just going to be limited to objects that are within Close Range, maybe Short Range at best, at which point they're almost right on top of you.
I agree with Donovan above- it's easy to translate the situation to modern air combat. At long range pilots/operators stare at radar displays and fiddle with ranges etc. At medium/close distance pilots actually start looking (with their eyes) for other aircraft - unless weather condition make it diffucult. Then it's back to displays and computers.
Using sensors is definitely a computer check in my opinion. Although it seems Perception is used for "Scan the enemy" action, which uses scanners/sensors. Circumstances would dictate perhaps?
