Why are the dice sold out everywhere?

By SmokeGunner, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have the core rules now but cannot buy the dice anywhere. What gives, didn't FFG foresee the demand and make enough of them? I am in the UK so if anyone knows of a UK retailer that has them in stock, please tell me!

Esdevium (the uk's game wholesaler) didn't order enough dice, they had sold out less than a week after release. Which now means we have a copy of the core with no dice in the shop, as a side note the beginers game is the same (no stock at Esdevium).

Looks like The Book Depository has some.

Fantastic! Thanks for the tip - just ordered 2 sets. The site says 48 hour delivery so looks like I should get them next week.

My FLGS had several monday, having just restocked, but shipping to the UK would be expensive. It sounds more like your FLGS/UFLGSs simply didn't order enough.

My local game store wasn't even aware that you needed special dice to play the game, so they didn't have any in stock. Amazon UK was out of stock, so I had to order a couple of packs from FFG in the US. Just picked them up yesterday, in fact. I already have the dice app, but there's just something special about holding physical dice in your hand and rolling them.

Looks like the naysayers we wrong about the dice being an obstacle, too expensive, etc.

Hope you folks get more dice on your side of the pond soon.

I don't think this says much about sales of anything.

Worst case, you could still get the app for a smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android), we started like that, but bought 2 other sets (on top of the Beginner's), as we prefer real dice anyways! ;)

Out here in California, I've managed to get 6 whole sets. It's been really tricky and involved a lot of waiting. My gaming store finally got some more, so it looks like they started a second run of the dice and should be better soon.

I managed to find a set at my local game store, but they have since sold out. I think FFG made plenty, but nobody ordered enough. Game shops and distributors underestimated the popularity.

I bought my stuff recently at my FLGS, wanting to give them support even if it cost me more. They were stocked well. I got the feeling they had sold out then restocked again. Is that possible already?

The owner suggested I get more dice, even offering me a discount to get extra sets. I already had the basic dice set, the beta dice home-made set (stickers), and so bought two more sets. I think I'm good since my group is at the most going to have two players plus me.

I got the rulebook, screen, and two dice. Ordering online with shipping, it would have cost me approximately $80 plus the postal wait. It cost me $99.91 at my FLGS (owner said he would get it under $100 so my wife wouldn't be too mad when I said I told her it would be around $80).

Support your local game store if you can afford it!

Use the charts in the books and just roll numeric polyhedrals (pg. 12).

We've found that one pack of dice isn't quite enough, so I'm going to try and get another pack.

I wouldn't want to use it forever, but as a temporary solution I would recommend the dice app.

$5 and it will cover all your needs until you can find another set or two.

The one FLGS in town had a few books last I checked, but only two sets of dice. I bought both. seem they didn't order enough dice sets either. Going back for a second look soon, but this time because I want a second book, three sets of dice (beginners set and two dice packs) plus the beta-sticker dice should suffice for a while.

Plenty of dice around my parts, but my FLGSs are pretty savvy when it comes to ordering product.

I was told on the 31st of July, that Gameslore UK were sold out of both the GM Kit and the dice sets until the end of August.

Picked up a GM Kit for £12.00 on EBay and 2 sets of dice for £28 (inc p+p) on Amazon.

Luckily I have a set from the Beginners Set so I'll be all set.

This is just like the Big Dice Draught of '88. You could not find a polyhedron if your life depended on it.

We had to whittle Detwennies from pieces of soap to get a game going. If the weather was moist, it was a nightmare.

Yep... this situation brings back dark memories.

Huh? I gamed back in the 80'ies and I had no difficulties ever finding dice up until the Dresden Files game came out and suddenly I needed Fudge dice to keep the system simple for new players.

Where was this drought? UK, Canada, Mid-west?

I think he's joking.

No, I remember the great polyhedron shortage as well, though I think it hit my neck of the woods earlier than '88. Not a die to be found, other than the standard d6!

(Of course, this was also back when the Red Box came with a set of dice and a white crayon so you could read them.)

Are the contents of the dice pack the same as what was included with the Beginner Game? Same number of die types, etc?

Yes.

Had the Beginner box from a bit ago, bought a dice pack when the book released. Two sets works fine for us for now (can always have more dice so there's enough of a mess for everyone, but two packs gets the job done). Also I have the app so that's another 'set'.
