Starting Up a Play by Post Game

By Zev Linare, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey, I played the Beta, and just got my hands on the real deal itself. Anyways, I play tabletop with some local friends, but playing one game on the one night a week that we can all get our schedules to align just isn't enough for me. I've done play by post before with both Saga Edition and WEG D6, both GMing and playing, so this is all familiar to me.

If I were to GM a campaign via play by post on Mythweavers (a free boards system for such things), would anyone be interested? I'd be looking for a simple 1 post per day commitment, and know from experience that I can handle 4-5 characters best as a GM.

I've got no specific plot in mind yet, but I'm very flexible and could design something to play to a set of PCs and their backgrounds. If you're interested, the first 5 people to claim a spot are in, and I'm willing to take additional claims as backups in case someone drops out.

Also, when staking a claim, post what sort of styles, themes, etc you'd like to see in a game. For example, it could deal with the typical group of spacers, a band of bounty hunters, CorSec agents, whatever.

Zev Linare,

I am interested. For me the general group of spacers is most appealing, but I'm open to other ideas as well.

-Nate

Although I have never participated in a play by post game, I would be interested. I've been gaming for years. I am currently a GM or my local group and really want to be a player in this system.

I wouldn't care about the theme as long as I get to play.

Count me in also, not bothered about the format either , i could work within most guidelines exept any 'evil' based campaign

I'm interested too. My tabletop GM has intimated he's planning a Black Sun themed game, so anything but that would suit me.

Edit: I realise that most of us choosing "anything" isn't very helpful, so here's a suggestion.

A group of spacers, at least some of whom have rebel leanings but aren't prepared (yet?) to fully commit to the Alliance, trying to stay one step ahead of their obligations whilst at the same time trying to avoid falling foul of Imperial forces.

I would be interested. Count me in

I'm stuck in Permanent GM mode with my group (Not that I don't enjoy it. GMing is fun in this system). I would like to play some time.

Seconded!

Sounds good, but it would be nice to also maybe play an ex imperial in that situation, having to earn trust and be under suspicion

I am interested and would love to play in a bounty hunter or ex-bounty hunter

I wouldn't have any problem with that.

I would love to join in, but am away from my book for two weeks. As far as the concept goes, I think that the group of spacers with Rebel leanings who have not yet committed to the Rebellion is a good one.

I would enjoy seeing an ex-Imperial in such a group. Could be a defector, could be disenchanted with the Empire, could have been drummed out of service... Lots of possible reasons I can see for such a character being part of the group.

A question about available species, are we limited to the ones in the book or are others available? I really have my heart set on playing on playing he child of a Hutt and its Sith lover... Just kidding about that, but I would like to play an alien.

Alright, looks like Nate, Fechik, syrath, Mandrake45, and boardgameguy are in. Strongarm85, AgentJ, and DavetheLost will be brought in in that order if/when anyone backs out. I'd include you all, but I once tried play by post with 9 players and learned my lesson.

For right now, the general group of spacers will do, but seriously, there's a lot more to every spacer than meets the eye. Ideas such as being a bounty hunter, ex-Imperial, or Rebel sympathizer are great. Be creative with it, and consider how a character's past ties into his/her motivation and obligation (which may even conflict). Also, I'm fine with bringing in supplemental stuff such as The Unofficial Species Menagerie, just run it past me before you do. Otherwise, the standard character creation rules will be in effect.

While I get a rough plot sketch down and a thread going over at Mythweavers (which I'll provide a link to), why don't you all throw out some character ideas - just quick descriptions with an obligation and a motivation. Those last two are major plot hooks around which I can built story arcs. Oh, and toss out some starship model/name suggestions too...

EDIT: Regarding characters, there are two types of characters that I want to rule out, because they are generally disruptive to any game.

  • First is the sociopath, someone lacking any semblance of morals or conscience. If a character is a kleptomaniac, I can roll with that. If they kill bystanders for no reason whatsoever or for pleasure, they're right out.
  • The second is character who by silence, awkward staring, or sheer lack of intelligence, does not participate/derails/ruins social encounters. I had a player who made a Rodian so min-maxed that he could outshoot anyone by roleplayed his low Charisma as total social ineptitude. Just don't go there - you can make a shy character or a character who doesn't communicate perfectly (like Chewbacca), but don't cop out of interacting and playing a character.

Any comments, questions, or snide remarks? :P

I'm looking at a Slicer. I was intending Twi'lwek until the USM got made available, I'm going to have a look through that.

I'd prefer not to end up as "The Mechanic", I'm leaning more towards Face-ish. For those that have seen Leverage, part Sophie, part Hardison. This may require playing something other than a Technician and taking the Slicer Tree as an out of career extra, which won't be cheap :)

Slicers are cool, Mandrake. Off topic, but in Saga I had a slicer with a Combat Implant that gave him proficiency with all weapons, because I didn't bother with any combat feats/talents, so while he wasn't the best at fighting, he kept grabbing whatever weapon was on hand. If we dropped an enemy with a light repeating blaster or our Jedi went down and dropped her lightsaber, guess who was proficient? ... What are you thinking of for obligation/motivation?

I did have an interesting thought last night, which I'll pose to you players as a matter of preference. Would you be interested in a traditional, the-ship-is-your-home-base and we hop from one planet to the next regularly campaign, or would you be interested in something a little more in the vein of Star Wars 1313, where it takes place - for the most part - on a single world, allowing for a more rich cast of NPCs to be developed? Cast a vote for one or the other.

Well, after looking at the USM and then Wookiepedia, I'm thinking Falleen. Motivation would be linked to the Bombardment of Falleen in 7 BBY, though until a Falleen is approved, I haven't taken it any further than that.

Edit: Falleen is still a maybe, not a definate, I'm still working through the USM and I haven't ruled out Twi'lek either. :)

Falleen is approved and would be an excellent "face" character.

Ok. Race may or may not be Falleen, had to go out for a while so I haven't got any further with the UMS. I did however do some thinking and I think I've got my career sorted out. Poltitco Colonist with Slicer as an extra specialisation.

Stryker (assumed name-see below) ex imperial scout who witnesses the destruction of a settlement by the empire. Aware that this was about to happen(because he overhears some imp comm chatter) he evacuates as many souls from the settlement he barely manages to get a few out before the settlement gets struck by orbital strike from a star destoyer. Disenchanted with what happened he goes to his superiors assuming that it was an Admiral gone mad, only to discover the strike was ordered, to ensure the death of one man, who was saved. Dishonored and facing charges for aiding a rebel , disbelieved by his supervisors he gets locked in the prison, he gets rescued by the rebels but not until after he endured torture, during which he broke and revealed everything he knew. While now disillusioned by the empire, he is not quite ready for joining the rebellion - although he does get asked. He did not at that time believe that following them was the right move as his own beliefs did not align (ie now anti imp, rather than pro rebel). He uses his experience to start making a living, introduced to the world of criminals by the very need to get a new identity and new life.

This gives lots of opportunity for alot of different obligation, betrayal of the people he saved to the empire eating at him

Blackmail from someone who knows his history,

Bounty from the empire

Debt to the people that provided a new identity

Thats the top four Id go for but there are a few more I could put forward

Edit oh and for race human since ex imp

I like the idea of having the ship be the party's home, rather than staying in more or less one place.

I'm still thinking about character ideas.

-Nate

I agree the game does not gravitate well with people staying too long in one place, obligation wouldnt work well with people who are settled albiet only temporarily.

Excellent points, Nate and syrath. A roving band it is.

I like the backstory/concept syrath. The ex-Imperial nature is full of plot hooks. Are you thinking of being an explorer or a hired gun with that? I'd think it would lean towards one of the two... or perhaps bounty hunter.

So far, backstories we have 2 backstories and 2 instances of plantetary bombardment by the Imperials. Bad guys, much? :)

Regarding the ship vs planet thing, I don't see any harm in occasional prolonged visits to planets rather than a quick "do the job then leave" a la Firefly but in general terms I agree the roving group fits the theme better than a static one.

Just curious. How do you actually play by post? I mean, I can see how you can play over skype and such, since there are programs to handle dice and such and even without, you could talk and run the game.

But by post... how do you drive the game forward. How do you handle encounters?

Just curious :-)

As far as i can see there are a njmber of options open for my character

1 As it stands Explorer-Scout using the human 2 skills to fill in for military trainig

2 Explorer-Fringer - While this appears to move away from the background if you consider the core rules you gain more advancement from doing something under pressure and it can be argued that he has been under more prssure since leaving service making fringer the logical choice - giving the group a navigator copilot

3 If the games are going to be more combat based then more likely it would be better to change the background story a little to this

Character started as a candidate for stormtrooper training, however his abilities / initiative and ability to lead get him fast tracked for officer training as an advance scout officer. Remove all space pilot training and replace with ground based jnstead. He is actually part of the star destroyers crew and is ground dropped as part of a team to split up and find this rebel target. He finds the target and calls it in noting that the target is about to move. The bombardment starts and my charcter argues that he can take out the target without collateral damage . Now unsure where his loyalties are he saves as many people he can (dependent on his vehicle) . This includes the target. He manages to get captured, the rest of story remains the same. The result of this is Hired gun /mercenary soldier/scout with the free skill ranks in scout. Will need to take extra obligation for starter xp probably though to cover cross classing outside career. It would work though.
