The thermal Detanators description states that it effects everything within short range. The range on the Detanators is then listed as short. Am I missing something, or does this mean it is impossible to throw it and not get yourself?

You could conceivably activate the detonator and then spend a maneuver to get out of range of the blast.
Thermal detonators as I understand them are basically bombs, and very dangerous to anyone nearby. I think this is why it was such a grave threat (and bluff) when Leia walked into Jabbas palace impersonating a Bounty Hunter, and threatened to blow everyone to pieces with one of these if she didn't get the reward she wanted. Very deadly.
There are also talents that increase the range at which you can throw weapons.
But yes, long story short: thermal detonators are powerful weapons that are very risky to use untrained.
Just the name "thermal detonator " implies pretty strongly that it's not a grenade. You place it where you want, set the timer and make a double maneuver to get clear.
Yes, I think it is entirely intentional that if you throw it you will be caught in the blast area. It is not designed as a thrown grenade. It is a bomb!

It works both ways, based on any timer or detonation method built in.
"I spend a destiny point to use my maneuver for the turn to run to Medium range while the detonator is in mid air!"
"Brother Maynard! Bring up the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch."
I think there will be a lot of Destiny points spent to either throw farther or chuck and run. Hmmm, a thermal detonator is about the size of a lacrosse ball, and I can sure lob one of those a lot farther with a stick, I wonder....

I actually have to question their ranges on thrown weapons. They state close range is up to several meters between targets. I can throw a baseball, or similar object more then several meters with reasonable accuracy, and I'm a pretty terrible throw. Looking at a good baseball player or the like they could easily throw a ball accurately into what could be considered medium range, possibly into long range (further then a few dozen meters by the book).
I could point to many military movies that have characters hurling grenades well beyond short with accuracy. You can say that those are Hollywood, and reality isn't like that, but Star Wars is supposed to be pretty Hollywoody in it's action.
I would imagine the user either throws it and uses 1 movement to get away, or places it down on a timer and moves away several range bands.

I can tell you from personal experience that grenades are a lot heavier than they look, especially the fragmentation kind. They are, after all, packed full of metal. Add to that the distinctly sphincter-loosening knowledge that if you fumble your throw in any way you and everyone around you turn into ground beef. The best and most common way to use grenades in real life is to hide behind something very solid, throw it as far as you can without exposing yourself to the people trying to kill you, and duck down and wait for the smoke to clear. Short range is a lot more realistic than it sounds, believe me.

Just paint it red and tell a passing Ewok to go give the apple to your friend the Gamorrean over yonder.
I was a little underwhelmed by the current Thermal Detonator, their too video game-y. I'm going to limit their use but up the damage a lot. Thermal Detonators as they are right now are okay but not the threat that was implied in RofJ. These buggers should level a block...

They currently do more damage than anti-vehicle personnel weapons, and have a huge blast radius. They're perfectly capable of taking out a floor of a building (as they do in Shadows of the Empire).

Yes, their plenty good, but for me I see them more as a plot device rather than a weapon that PCs should be tossing around willy-nilly. Grenades and explosives in general are not well suited to RPGs, IRL they are terribly effective and it's just difficult to write good rules for them. Their usually written to weak which breaks the suspension of disbelief (at least for my group) or too deadly, which is more accurate but not so fun when the PCs get blow'd up...
They're hardly "willy nilly", they're insanely expensive and very illegal.
One costs almost half as much as a full suit of battle armor. That's really expensive.
