How good is expose?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

does anyone play with expose?

seems like it would be good on vader or wedge but its 4pts which is alot.

do u think its worth it?

We had a recent game which had Wedge with expose and in theory he is the best choice for it. For optimal effect it needs to be coupled with either a focus or a target lock action at range 1 to justify the cost but it is probably a better bet that a single proton torpedo. It works best against an already damaged target if you can destroy it before it retaliates. Against most opponents you will rarely have Wedge out of of an enemy fire arc so he will be lucky to use it more than 2 times before he is seriously damaged. So you may need to invest more points in trying to keep him alive (shield upgrade, R2-D2).

Vader's strength with the double action combo is good as he is more likely to have a target lock established or have a focus action. His greater natural agility should save him more too.

Expose on Soontir Fel would be pretty scary too.

Thanx DB. expose on vader could be the best use for this it alright. i agree its the double action that makes this card so much better. it does seem better on high pilot skill guys eh? ur not so worried about -1 defense as u can get in the first shot anyway :)

I like expose on Mauler Mithel, at range 1 he has 5 attack dice. Have Howlrunner nearby and he gets a reroll. If she has squad leader she can throw a focus on Mauler.

In my casual games I find it works well on someone that Biggs is running interference for, Wedge is obviously best because of his already nasty offensive skills but I'd say anyone can do in a pinch. For imperials I find putting it on Mauler and flying him alongside backstabber is terrifying. They're going to be out firing arcs as often as possible and if you get off an optimal turn it'll be nine dice over two attacks.

Once Wave 3 hits someone has to try Wedge with expose+Biggs+Jan Ors. Six dice and one less defense at range one and biggs to negate the lose of agility. Ouch.

Something like this for example?

Wedge w/Expose & R2 (34)

Biggs w/Stealth & R2F2 (31)

Jan Ors w/Squad Leader, Blaster Turret & Recon Specialist (34)

Total: 99 points

Now, without seeing the dial of the Hawk, I have no idea how the ships will perform together but I do think this will work.

Wanted to see if I could make good use of Maarek so I threw together this squad.

Maarek Steele w/ expose, clusters missile (34)

Darth Vader w/ squad leader (31)

Soonter Fell w/stealth device, PTL (33)

It ran decently well. The idea was to try to take advantage of Maarek's ability as often as possible, so I would have a target lock on him whenever I could. Vader allows Maarek to TL on turns when he uses expose and adds some general versatility giving Soonter the possibility of 3 actions in a turn or being able to take two actions himself. I was rolling pretty hot the game I tested it but Maarek blasted ships out of the sky in one shot several times that game. I think I am going to explore it some more and see what I could possibly change to bring it up to something that might be tournament worthy.

In general I think that expose needs support to work well and so I think that if you are going to use it then you are going to find yourself needing other ships to make it work. Whether its Biggs to take shots, or someone with squad leader to make up for your lack of action. Really the ability should probably be 2pts instead of 3 and then we might see it on the table once in a while. I mean think about it on Vader, you're basically paying 32pts to have a slightly more versatile x-wing with a different manoeuvre dial.

I don't like putting expose on a 2 attack pilot, doesn't seem to get its full worth

I put expose on Wedge in my last game and gave him a stealth device as well. Some decent flying kept him from getting attacked and was able to get in range one of a lot of ships. The stealth device kept wedge at 2 agility but nobody could hit him. Expose was a pretty nasty upgrade.

As stated above, Expose is fantastic on Wedge accompanied by Biggs. I would also be tempted to throw it on Han accompanied by Biggs.

Something like that yeah. I think even if the hwk dial isn't on par with the x-wing it would still be decent as all three named pilots can use their ability as far out as range three.

Would depend. I'd say turning a mediocre two attack into a good three attack would be as valuable as turning a good three into an amazing four. Especially if at range one where they'd get +1 anyway.

Here's my Expose squad:

Chewbacca (Expose, Weapons Engineer)

Biggs Darklighter

Garven Dreis

Total 100 points

Biggs allows Chewie to Expose without getting wailed on, and Garven conveniently passes his Focus to Chewie for powerful 4-5 dice turret attack. If Garven gets destroyed then Chewie can use Weapons Engineer (2 target locks) so that the following turns he can use Expose w/ Target Lock. I've only tried it once but it worked pretty well. Chewie's "Crits don't scare me" ability makes him a good candidate for Expose. And really, that Agility value of one only helps half the time anyway, so I find that I don't regret using Expose. Of course, it's best to use it with Biggs at your side, or when you're out of enemy arcs, as has been mentioned above.

I don't like putting expose on a 2 attack pilot, doesn't seem to get its full worth

The more dice you have the more likely you are to get a crit. I don't think its a top notch list or anything but its one of the uses I've found for expose.

I have used expose on Wedge and I'm frankly underwhelmed. Without a target lock or focus to help out, it's just to unreliable at 4 points.

The points are better spent on PtL and an R2 unit.

Target lock and focus together make for a much better hit rate.

Just my experience.

I just used expose on little firepower 2 Mauler Mithel yesterday, 4 hits and a critical his fresh target just vaporized.

This guy shows that it has the potential for massive damage but on average is worse than focusing.

If Wedge could get target locks from a previous round maybe, so a Dutch run? Garven wouldn't be much use for him, unless of course it's enough to just touch any die to allow you to spend focus and you repeatedly fly him into asteroids. :)
