Yours favorite monsters??

By BroLuk, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I wondering about making some monsters ranking. You can write here top 3 your beloved monsters which you like playing as Overlord. My top 3 is:

1. Sorcerer

2. Dragon

3. Razorwing

(number 1 means that i like play this monster the most, number 2 means that is second, etc).

You can type here all monsters from all expansion sets.

1. Razorwings

2. Dark Priests

3. Kobolds

The first two are for power reasons, speed and damage.

The last one is because I get to yell in a high pitched voice, emulate speech from Diablo, and, occasionally, just occasionally, I manage to kill somebody (laugh if you want to, I once stripped Silver level armor off of a frosted hero by having eight Kobolds attack him.)

EDIT: These are RtL, if non-RtL, take Razorwings out, #3 is Blood Apes

1) Dark Priests - being able to convert surges into something other than threat is a great ability

2) Ferrox - for me, these guys are tank killers. Attacking a tank with 3 Ferrox and being able to place bleed tokens on a guy with 5 armor and take half his life down the next turn = priceless

3) Deep Elves - haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate them...as a player. Love them as an OL.

Beastmen .

Sure they are simple and the cannon fodder of the game but damnit somebody needs to stand up for their rights.

Have a dragon ? Toss in some Beastmen to make it raise the threat factor.

You think your demons are scary enough ? Add some Beastmen to spice up the scary.

Have orange juice ? Toss in some beastmen to make a screwdriver.... or was it vodka? I am pretty sure if you toss in beastmen it will make it even better!

Go Beastmen Go!

I love:

Naga's

Skeletons

Giants

Beastmen, Manticores and Deep Elves.

So far nearly 40% of my Overlord kills have been contributed to Beastman War Party or the Beastmen the heroes didn't consider to be a threat.

Beastmen, Bane Spiders and Blood Apes.

I would have to agree that the same thing has happened with me when the Heroes got overconfident and the Beastmen would tear them apart one by one. The Master Beastmen are not to be taken lightly and now my players have a bit more respect for the Beastmen when they go up against them.

I only have the base game but I must share yout opinion. Sorcerers are the best. hellhounds second best and at the third place i'm gonna put the archer skeletons. I'm a big fan of ranged attacks and undying. This ability often gives the players a bit of stress

Intresting choices made by some of you. There are named some Monsters i never would like to name as my favorit.

My favorits playing RTL:

Dark Priest

Skeleton

Beastman/Sorcerers

Plaing not RTL the Skeletons will go out and Sorcerers will take this Place.

Descent:

1. Dark Priest

2. Beastmen

3. Ferrox

Descent RtL:

1. Beastmen

2. Deep Elf

3. Razor Wing

1. Dark Priests - So much damage, and they pay for their own spawning in a few turns

2. Beastmen - Makes everyone more awesome. Also, mimic chests count as beastmen, and I loves me some living treasure chests.

3. Kobolds - Makes my traps cheaper. Come in packs of 6 or 9. What's not to love?

1. Dark Priests - Great Damage, Range, and more Threat. Pay for themselves if you can keep them around and that curse comes in handy.

2. Naga - Command, Grapple, good hp and armor.

3. Kobolds - the SWARM!! and hide the tricksters to lower trap costs.

Descent:

1- Beastmen

2- Dark Priests

3- Demons

Descent RtL:

1- Ferrox

2- Razorwings

3- Kobolds

I've just got to put Ferrox at the top because a Silver Master Ferrox with the Titan as your Avatar will average 12 damage a hit vs a 1 armor squishy mage without fatigue. demonio.gif

(1) Ferrox

(2) golem

(3) demon.

Ferrox are really good despite being weak as beastmen. they can make you bleed to death, therefore making the little guys good against tanks, and they drain l;ife and fatiuge. golems are awesome tanks, and can't be killed easily, giving other monsters(my ferrox :) ) a chance to reach them, and demons cause they just own in general.

1) Skeleton

2) Master Beastmen/Master Naga's

3) Master Bane spiders

Skeleton's get a ton of kills, often able to spawn behind the hero's, and with range and piercing, hard for the hero's to deal with the constant drain on health. The command ability is the best ability for the overlord hands down as far as I am concerned. Add Command to those skeletons and they become even better. Last on the list is the web masters. Nothing like sniping a webbed hero with those pesky skeleton's.

Also, as a side note, I do not own the TOI expansion, and have yet to play test those monsters.

1. Manticores
Have never failed to kill or assist in the death of at least one hero. If they dont kill them, then the other guys finish them off.

2. Ferrox
a team of two can cause some major bleeding pain to heroes, even those with 6 armor

3. Beastmen
because they are always underestimated, and my heroes have never once ignored a group of beastmen without paying some form of price for it.

Useless:

1. Hell Hounds
Have scored 1 wound (ONE) out of some 30 sessions of descent. They have almost always been dodged or OHK from heroes. I almost dont even bother summoning them anymore.

2. Skeletons
My heroes keep track of the number of arrows stuck in their armor as a result of skeleton attacks that have done no damage.

3. Bane Spiders
So big that usually I cant spawn all of them (from the card). My heroes usually keep a good LOS around them (they learned this the hard way >:-) ), and as such I never have enough room to spawn them anywhere near the heroes anymore.

1. Dragon

It`s cool !!

2. Sorcerer

Love the undying abbiliti :)

3. Ferrox

Bleed is a Hero Killer :)

1. Dragon

2. Master Skeleton

3.Razor wing

1. KOBOLDS - Just for the fun off it, and you can jump up and down with a high pitched voice saying 'KOBOLDS!' + Trapmaster is Awesome 'Oh look I played another Spiked Pit for Free' -cue evil laugh-

2. MANTICORE - Kills Things + Rage = 4shots = Death!

3. KOBOLDS!!!! Hey wait.... i meant BEASTMEN!!!!! - often overlooked but bash heroes + command ability :)

mmmmm KOBOLDS..... :)

1. Ferrox - Nothing like bleeding and draining fatigue from the heroes.

2. Golems - The cry of despair as the party realizes that they can't use any of their special attacks is music to my ears. :)

3. Razorwings - BATS OF DOOM!!!

Honorable Mentions:

Hell Hounds - relativly painless to the heroes, but fun when you can manage to use one to kill off 2 players at the same time ;)

Ogres - Knockback + Pits... what's not to love?

Demons - FEAR!

I have, and I suspect always will have, a soft spot for the Eldritch creatures. So, my favourites:

1. Dark Priests

2. Skeletons

3. Sorcerors

How people aren't doing damage with the Skeletons is beyond me. Even in the very first dungeon level, while the skeletons were still copper, I killed the tank with ease (turning him into a pin cushion) and wounded several others. Make it a master skeleton and the heroes have a problem.

Especially now they are diamond.

Having only the original game Descent:Journeys in the Dark, these are my choices:

1 - Demon - I once double-raged a master demon and took out 2 heros with full health in one turn, plus a demon always makes heros think twice about entering a room because you see them so seldom.

2 - Beastman - deceptively powerful little guys, I love spawning them on back to back turns, especially when there are already beastmen in the room... when you've got heros going to town because they're afraid of the beastmen, you know you have enough.

3 - Sorcerer - especially the master sorcerer... 5 lives later and still dishing out the punishment, converting sorcery to damage... good times had by all, especially if there are some beastmen and a demon around.

Mainly from RTL plays

  1. Razorwings, just drawing one of these little guys is enough for my heroes player to start squirming from bad memories.
  2. Ferrox, for bleed
  3. Master Bane Spiders, web has been a winning play for me more than once.

Of course I did play as the Dragon in our RTL campaign, so I'm sure it'll change after trying a new avatar.

ps, no polls on this forum either?

  1. Beastmen
  2. Kobalds
  3. Demons.

:)
