Edge of the Empire Movie Inspiration

By DoctorWhat, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Pitch Black (outer rim story)

Alien 4: Resurrection (for the smuggler crew)

Outlander (stranded on a backward planet)

The Last Starfighter (because...starfighters)

Flash Gordon (just for the campiness)

Defiance (tv series with aliens and a western motif)

I've used The Magnificent Seven/ Seven Samurai plot before (twice) a Star Wars adventure.

Poor farmers threatened by Gamorreans, Nikto and Weequay with speeder bikes, great fun.

Although the bit that gets talked about most is when the Jedi PC with his brand new jet pack, fumbled on it's maiden flight and flew straight into the cliff.

Used The Maltese Falcon as well. I like a good Bogart film :)

In terms with coming up with a story?

Anything that is fast-paced will help. But for plot lines, I'd look at movies (even non science fiction/fantasy ones) that have multiple layers. Plots within the plots.

For me as a GM, I know that my players are going to metagame the plot. Whether they do it on purpose or not, they will attempt to work out what's going on out of character. So I typically like to have lots of misdirections in my plots. Not just for the characters, but for the players as well. So it becomes doubly enjoyable for them as things get revealed.

And then I recommend switching it up where the plot is super straightforward with no misdirections and twists, just to mess with the metagaming minds yet again (since they will expect it if you do it too often). The more you can surprise the players, the better.

The great thing about Star Wars is that since it's more fantasy than Sci-Fi you can look to all kinds of places for inspiration. Find an interesting plot from even sources like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad and then change setting, make some characters aliens, change the macguffin, and voila. Star Wars.

I'm thinking about doing an adaptation of Cowboy Funk from Cowboy Bebop. The characters will be pursuing bounty similar to the Teddy bomber. The Bounty Hunter Rival "Cowboy" will be a rich guy seeking adventure who fancies himself a Mandalorian.

Nice. I was thinking about using the first episode with Red-eye and changing the name to Red Rancor.

The Dam Busters (inspiration for the flight sequences at the end of Ep IV)

Red Tails (Lucas doing WWII movies)

Any 1950s/1960s WWII movies. (Inspirations for the Empire)

"Buck" Rogers & Flash Gordon serials. (Inspirations for Ep IV.)

Gibson: How many guns do you think there are, Trevor?

Trevor-Roper: I'd say there are about ten guns - some in the field, and some in the tower.

Silverado?

The characters consist of a pair of brothers a friend the older brother picks up on the way and who has to help him break out hi younger brother after he finds one of the goons who robbed him and left him to die.

Then there's the guy they help prevent being arrested because he's being harassed because of his race and thtas before they find themselves heading for the same home town!

So I saw a flick last night that would make an excellent EotE game: A Man Called Django

The trailer doesn't do it justice, but the story of a Roaring Rampage of Revenge would make a pretty solid adventure for a player obsessed with an injustice once inflicted upon them

I think there was another thread about this, but a couple more (dark examples) include:

Breaking Bad

The Usual Suspects

In Bruges
