It starts....

By Fechik, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have finally begun my campaign. We had our first session the other night and am so excited I want to share. The early stages of this campaign are a mix of homebrew with pieces and parts of the FFG adventures.

Below is a shortened condensed version of the session. If you want a longer (lot longer), more narrative take on the action check out Simple Possession Act 1 pt 1 . If you want a rundown of the characters check out The Cast .

The session begins with the characters in a space station cantina. In the adjacent hangar, one ship crashes into another creating a huge explosion. The doc runs out to see if there's anyone he can help and runs into a Besalisk leaving the crashed ship who begs the doc to help him find a way out. The doc leads him through the cantina and into a storage room where he then collapses.

About this time, another ship lands in the hangar bay, this time much more hostile. Exiting the ship are four hostile humanoids that begin laying waste to everyone, civilians, droids, and players.

Most of the players attempt to engage in one form or fashion. One attempts to slice into the system to get the smoke cleared out. A couple of them engage in a fire fight with the hostiles. One simply hides until he feels threatened and then pleas for his life, while the doctor tries to revive the Besalisk. A couple rounds into it the apparent captain of the ship exits the ship and surveys the area.

The doc eventually revives the Besalisk, who is scared and panicked. The Besalisk hands the doc an item and begs him to make sure "he" doesn't get it. With failing breath the Besalisk then warns the doc about the impending danger of who is in the hangar, then dies. The doc then runs to the hangar and warns everyone to leave, but in less eloquent language.

They all flee the hangar. The Captain then orders his crew to enter the ship. The ship then takes off but when it clears the station, it fires off a buttload of missiles at the station.

As if things weren't any worse the space station begins listing when a voice comes over the PA system warning everyone to evacuate, find a ship or escape pod.

The players eventually make it to the other hangar and find the Krayt Fang. After a moral debate, they eventually board it and attempt to leave but the docking clamps are still in place and it cannot take off. One player then tries to slice into the stations computer to release the clamps when the pilot sees Trex running through a blast door toward his ship.

The Gand is still trying to slice the system while Trex is beating on the boarding ramp. The doc decides to lower the ramp. At first opportunity, Trex fires on the doc, knocking him to the floor. There is a breif firefight before the clamps are removed. The ship then jolts into the air, knocking Trex down and ending the firefight.

They get into space safely enough, and right before all the crazy stuff happens on the Krayt Fang, one of the players watches the space station burn up in the planet’s atmosphere. Right before it is completely engulfed, a small white dot is jettisoned from the station.

Then all the crazy crap that happens to the Krayt Fang happens (read the Long Arm of the Hutt to find out). When they finally get it all resolved, the group jumps to hyperspace heading for Tattooine.

Let me know what you think.

I loved it. Great intro to your game. I need to do something like this for my group to set the theme, and do a previous session catchup. hmm. You are inspiring :) Time to google Star Wars scroll apps.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can grab Crawl Creator by Foley Productions. Otherwise, there's one on the Star Wars website .

I think I like your use of the Force Die to introduce a random element into the narrative. Your GM notes regarding how the smoke may be affecting them was interesting and gave each player a separate experience within the same encounter was very cool. It's subtle, but I think I might look for ways to use it in a similar way at times, not always since the situation often dictates the scenario, but for those times where each player could be impacted differently, that might be a good way to do it if a random element would be reasonable.

Sounds like a great session, nice writeup. Just curious, it sounds like all the players were in different locations, how did you handle the team coordination?

I used the Crawl Creator on my iphone. The only issues that I couldn't add SW music to the crawl through the creator. Licensing issues i believe. TO work around that, save the crawl movie uploaded it to my PC and then added music in WIndow's Live Movie maker.

I really think that the Force DIe doesn't get enough love in the game. Especially when there are no force users. Like you had said, when there are random elements involved that can effect the game I plan on using the Force Die. Another way I plan on using it is flying through Asteroid field.

Yes there were a few different locations. The only one that could not directly see what was going on in the battle was the doctor. The rest could see, or at least hear, what was going on.

Thanks for reading. I love this system and I think sharing stories and ideas are part of what makes any RPG great.

Great stuff. My co-GM (Venthrac) suggested we do something like this for the game we started a few weeks ago and we're looking into options. I love the idea of adding a "commentary track" in the form of GM comments to show how the game system worked or didn't work.

For those that are interested part 2 of my first session is up.. CLICK HERE . as the campgain progressed I'l probably start a different thread with an appropriately named title.

Thoughts are appreciated.

I had to go read what this was about. Excellent idea using the dark pips on the Force die to represent the amount of smoke in your face for # of setbacks. Use of the Force die for things such as this should be expanded upon:

Your party is running across a lake of ice as it starts cracking. Each player rolls a Force die to see the affect on their Coordination roll to avoid falling through the ice - Light pips means you are finding a good path clear of cracking, Dark pips add setback as the ice cracks apart below your feet...

Your party is running through a large hangar in the middle of a Stormtrooper vs. Rebel massive fire fight. Each player rolls a die with black pips indicating how many times they get shot at before reaching the boarding ramp....

Edit: Consider it a varying affects determination die.

This is exactly what I was thinking when introducing it in my game... This give me a great idea.

And it allows you as the GM to say things after rolls like, "With you the Force is", in Yoda's voice. Or, "Oh, the Force is not with you I'm afraid...", in that old Templar's voice from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade . Or just the Emperor's, both work. :)

How did the Trandoshan and the Wookiee resolve their racial hatreds of each other? :)

While making characters, I made certain that each player understood the animosity between their characters. They both said they'd role play it accordingly. Unfortunately, the wookie did not show up for that session. So, it's still undetermined how their relationship is going to work out.

Session 3... the party opens the cells at the back of the ship and finds the Wookiee. Once he sees the Trandoshan, he's overcome with rage and attacks (they all look alike to the Wookiee), a massive brawl erupts resulting in one of the party dead before Session 4 :P

Oh I'm sure it will end up something like this... Well maybe not. I have a few pacifists in the group that will most likely attempt to break them up. If that happens I will most likely antagonize both the Trandoshan and the Wookie to instigate something with the other as often as I can. One of the reasons I picked the Krayt Fang was to add fuel to the fire.
