Millenium Falcon Repaint Video

By jayadan, in X-Wing

Hey, guys.

I finally got around to doing my Millenium Falcon repaint and I did a video on the subject:

Thanks for the great video. Any plans for a repaint tutorial of a Firespray?

Nice job, man. I enjoy your videos. As someone considering stepping up to an airbrush after years of miniature wargaming, I find your commentary insightful and useful. Thank you for taking the time to film this as you went along.

Much appreciated, and nice work.

That was nice and I learned a few things, but you're not going to paint the guns or landing gears?

The guns are essentially the same color as the hull and the landing gear isn't going to get looks at on the table.

I've certainly been thinking about it. I really enjoy painting the ships.

No problem. I really enjoy doing the videos when I can. I wish I could have done this one sooner.

Have you tried anything else to strip these ships? I don't think I've ever be brave enough to put W&N brush restorer on something plastic (since I believe the label says "don't use on plastic". :)

Well, as I mentioned in the video, this is the first time the stuff has failed me. I think I'm going to try out Simple Green - which is something that I lot of people recommend as a stripper that won't harm plastics.

I've done the simple green (concentrated formula). You have to let it soak for a while and on some ships it works well and others, it could be better.

I've never found the real need to strip the paint off these, although the Falcon and Firespray do seem like the plastic isn't quite as hard as some pieces on the smaller ships, so maybe it was just not as tough as the others.

I've found that a light grey airbrushing over the whole ship is much easier than stripping down to the plastic. You could even use a spray primer like Tamiya Fine Surface Primer if you don't have an airbrush.

As an experiment I tossed a Y-Wing in some Simple Green, since I usually use that for stripping paint from plastic. It does seem like the paint is more resistant to the SG than normal, but it has only been in there an hour.

It's a case by case basis I think. My falcons that I repainted stripped pretty easily. But the yellow on the Y-wing and all the colors on the X-wing were a pain in the butt. I had one A-wing that stripped pretty well, while the other held its color no matter what and had the same experience with my firesprays. But I think you're right, the paint can be painted over in most cases and does not matter (though I think getting the wash off is nice and that always comes off easy).

That is odd. I think you are right about the variability. My Y that was in Simple Green overnight... The only thing that came off easily was the black wash and the yellow paint :)

Pain in the butt. I think I still prefer the overspray, the prepainted doesn't really glob it on like they do with the Dust models.

See, now that's odd, because I find that the Dust models have a very fine spray that doesn't require stripping at all.

The vehicles, yes. But I've had soldiers so bad you could barely make out the face. But, like X-Wing, there's a lot of inconsistency.
