Conclave fleet + dark archon + Maelstrom = super awesome

By blarknob, in StarCraft

Ok so the Dark archon tech Maelstrom is really good but when you combine it with conclave fleet it is completely nuts. All you have to do is research maelstrom and build a dark archon on your conclave fleet and you can cancel a mobilize to any of your bases. I used this in a game last night to hold the points I needed to win the game.

Maelstrom is by far the best reason to get dark archons.

Ofc, this works only if you are allowed to build/put tech-required units on this Leadership card. But I'm not sure if you can do that, just because of that totally sick (although quite expensive) possibility and lack of appropriate explanation in BW rules for most Leadership cards.

On my last game (about seven days ago) I thought of giving exactly this tactic a try, but then I changed my mind and played the Overmind with a Lurker Rush (the Zerg are coming, wuhahaha) demonio.gif

After the game I had a second closer look at this tactic and I'm not sure if it is really allowed by the rules.

The strategy relies purely on getting a Dark Archon on your Conclave Fleet.

First possibility:

1. You can build a Dark Templar on the Conclave Fleet Card in your Play area - no problem

2. You need the Technology Card - no problem

3. You want to build a Dark archon on your Conclave Fleet. The Archon-Tech card reads:

You may now build Archons and Dark Archons by paying their cost and destroying 2 High Templars ( for an Archon) or 1 Dark Templar (for a Dark Archon) on the active planet.

The Conclave Fleet is not the active planet, so you get no build order up there to turn a Dark Templar (DT) into a Dark Archon (DA).

Second possibility:

1. You can build a DT on any planet - no problem

2. You need the Technology Card - no problem

3. You want to build a DA on your active planet and shift him to the Conclave Fleet.

This is the other thing you could do. Simply execute a build order on a planet where you have a DT and turn him into a DA and place this new build unit on the card. But for me as a fan of the computer game this sounds wrong, because the DA is not newly build it is merged and should stay where the DT was. There is a sentence in the standard SC rulebook:

page 38 "Tech-required" units: Then the new tech-required unit must be placed in the area that contained one of the units that was destroyed to build it.

So the DT should be placed there because it was merged. Of course you still could argue the leadership card is an exception to this rule but for me this doesn't sound right. Only my thoughts... gui%C3%B1o.gif

The way I interpereted it you can't sacrifice a dark templar that is on the conclave fleet to get an archon, but I think you can place the dark archon onto the conclave fleet when you build it on one of your planets that has a base.

I'll submit the rules question.

Think Blarknobs solution is the most logical one. I admit though that the Leadership cards generate some serious rule problems.

Here is the rules question I submitted to FFG and the answer. Looks like this trick works.

Rule Question:
I have a question about the aldaris leadership card conclave fleet.

Can tech required units be placed onto the conclave fleet card when
built?

Answer:
Yes. There is nothing that prevents Aldaris from placing tech required
units on the Conclave Fleet card when he builds them.

I hope this answers your question!

Notice how else it can be usefull...

If you are afraid that someone may destroy your base or units (templars), just merge them into archons and place on this card. You don't even need to have the base on planet where you merge templars.

That's the one more reason to choose Conclave Fleet - it works perfect with any Templar-based strategies.

I assume that rules for building tech-required units remain unchanged (you must have units on planet , they cannot be merged with those on Leadership card).

That being the best strat. for protoss!

However, the Riches of Aiur Ld card is a heck of a great card too. However, I will hesitate longer next time I play Aldaris.

Yeah I'm going to have to have VERY good reasons not to pick conclave fleet in the future with aldaris. This is classic aldachrons only even more awesome.
