Do not like my obligations! Come help!

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Right now my characters obligation is split between two. 10 debt and 5 oath. The Oath is the one that I am having my trouble. I rolled it but I can't find a way to work it into my starting stuff.

I guess because no one his chimed in on this that it is my turn. That is good. We start playing soon and if I'm going to change my obligation then I need to do it.

I have a fifteen obligation. 10 in debt and 5 in oath. The debt obligation isn't my problem. That works into my back story and what I rolled for my cause.

Time for my back story.

My character is from the planet Juvex in the Senex-Juvex sector of the mid rim. This was once a haven for slavers before the sector joined the Republic and had to end that for the securtity and access to trade routes and other great things that comes with being a Republic sector. Once the Empire took over though, they had lax rules on slavery and the houses that ran the sector that built there power on the backs of slaves were more then willing to take up their bad habit once again.

My character is not part of the noble houses. He is a simple man whose family owns some land and does various businesses to get by.

In his youth he freed some slaves from a lesser noble family and is now in their debt. He left his home and became a hired gun because he is good with a blaster and it is one of the few jobs that pays enough to hopefully over come the ludacris interest they are seemingly piling on just to torture him.

Now at the suggestion of a friend of mine the oath is to stop slavery but that makes my character have all his obilgations and cause all wrapped up in slavery.

Does anyone have any ideas to make this more interesting and less single minded?

Oath is supposed to be an obligation based on morality, the way your character views the galaxy. One aspect of your character's back story you could keep in mind is that he came from a non-noble family. Perhaps he his experiences with slavery has caused him to look at nobility in general as a plague upon the galaxy. Maybe he sees excess wealth as something that corrupts people. He's seen noble houses do horrible things to sentient beings. Maybe his oath is a certain level of willful poverty? As a hired gun maybe he only accepts enough money to keep him functioning and working in his other goals, never having an excess of money. Any excess money he gets he donates to charities or just gives impoverished people he stumbles across in his travels.

Or maybe just invent an entirely new aspect of your character's background you haven't thought of. Maybe his Oath is the Jedi code. When he was a small child a Jedi fleeing Order 66 stayed with his family for a brief period, your character was so smitten by this figure representing morality and virtue even as a child, he knew these were the tenants of morality that would shape his life. The renegade Jedi moved on after a few days, but that shining example has remained at the center of his moral compass. Your character is not a force user, but the Jedi code to him is about standing up to bullies, correcting injustices, and similar notions. That could be a reason as to why your character felt it was necessary to free those slaves. Maybe it wasn't until your character became an adult that he actually learned the Jedi code through black market Jedi holocrons that cost him large sums of money to acquire.

Alternately your character could be a loyal citizen of the Empire. He could truly believe that force users are demonic beings. He could believe the Empire is doing the galaxy good. He could be angry at the noble houses for taking slaves, but knows that the Empire wouldn't stand for this, it's just shady nobles and criminals taking advantage of the system. The Empire is so large that they can't hope to possibly control every criminal act. And that's something people just have to accept. But the rebellion is bad. Your character knows it was the Rebel terrorists that sneaked aboard the Imperial Death Star, (named as such to instill fear in the rebel terrorists) and caused the destruction of Alderaan to rally support behind their self serving cause. Then a sneak attack ended with the destruction of the death star, killing thousands of loyal imperial citizens and military personnel. The Empire is order in a galaxy of chaos.

A couple ideas off the top of my head on some fun things to do with Oath. I know these aren't easily 'resolvable' situation which would get rid of the obligation, but there might be things that happen that could shake your character's moral fiber to remove the Oath obligation. Like finding out that it really was the Empire who blew up Alderaan. Or realizing it's not wealth that corrupts people, it is greed. Or finding out that Jedi are just as flawed as everyone else, and many fell to the dark side. I hope this inspires you.

or "Duty", considering she's a princess. Maybe there's a conflict on her planet that'll be up to her some day to help her people through.
