Specialization talent combination

By AustinKatan, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Howdy everyone, I tried to see if I could find anything about this but no luck so here I post.

After listening to one of the newer order 66 podcasts I noticed them mentioning combinations of talents. Like a Fringer Merc. Soldier. Or a Outlaw Tech Gadgeteer.

Now I have a player in my game with me who really wanted to make the rogue archetype. Sneaky, stealy, stabby. She was pretty crestfallen when we explained that wasn't really an option and she chose the straight thief.

I've been wondering if anyone could think of any cross specialization that would create the kind of character she was hoping fo or share any other ideas for crazy combos with the rest of us.

And yes, I am aware that I could look this up myself but the GM has my copy of the core rulebook while he's preping our first section.

Thanks and may the Force be with you.

Assassin would be a good one, as it covers the stabby side of things. Your player's already got the sneaky and stealy parts down by taking the Thief spec.

Another option might be Marauder, as that's focused entirely on dealing out damage in melee, but there's not a lot of sneaky to it.

Well, out of Sneaky, Stealy, and Stabby, the Thief specialization at least covers the first two of those, and as Meat Loaf himself said, two out of three ain't bad.

Still, to add some good combat abilities that synergize well with Thief, I might suggest Gadgeteer. That gives a few combat skills, and the the right-hand side of the tree gives a lot of flavorful abilities that I think fit well with the dastardly rogue archetype.

Definitely just go Thief Assassin, it will cover all of your sneaky/stabby needs, although realize at the start of the game, you aren't a super hero... you are the equivalent of a 1st level "meh".

Hired Gun: Marauder with secondary spec in Assassin, with this understanding:

Me personally, what part of the classes is she/he interested in? If it's actually sneaking and stabbing people, then I'd say assassin/thief would work. If it's being stealthy and doing tons of damage and vanishing, then I'd say assassin/marauder for the stacking +critical. Or even Assassin/Bodyguard for barrage on top of stealth skills. Nothing says "I love you" like an aimed heavy rifle shot to the chest with barrage, lethal blows, and targeted blows. Tack on a spin barrel and an optical scope to bring the difficulty down and you've got a ready made sneaky sneaky BOOM.

My 2 c.

Survivalist has a lot of stealth-oriented talents as well, and could combine with Assassin in-career to save some XP. The higher end talents aren't as nice as Thief if the primary concern is sneaking, but depending on the environment could actually be better (for instance, sneaking through rough/scattered/noisy terrain would probably be better via Survivalist, I think).

Thanks for all the input. Now lets keep this ball rolling. I want this to the the thread where people come for ideas on talent combos.

I think that Jedi Exile Survivalist is a natural fit. Anyone else have a good suggestion or a favorite?

It's odd to find so much character synergy between relatively unrelated specialization trees.

Bodygaurd / Politico -- Good support for an officer type character.

Survivalist / Trader -- Big game hunter/poacher with some black market parts dealing. They kind of guy that on Earth could get you a kilo of powdered white rhino horn by lunch. If you're paying top dollar for space slug steaks...this cat's got you covered.

Scholar / Scout -- Indiana Jones in space.

Maurader / Fringer -- Ex convict or...escaped convict

I don't know how natural it is, but for my first character I was looking for a pilot, who also could be sneaky and infiltratey. Somebody who started life on the street and survived as a thief before getting into piloting. I pretty much just went Thief. I don't have the exp at start to add the piloting specialization so I took a couple skill points in the skill, and will add the specialization at a later date. Being human allowed me to throw a skill point into a shooting skill as well, so I can have a bit of combat readiness.

For a tertiary specialization I might dabble in force exile, or add a bit of assassin, but that would be much farther down the line.

Scholar / Scout -- Indiana Jones in space.

Well I know why my next character will be.

Yes, the other Harrison Ford character.

Now we just need a rogue-droid hunting combo for the trifecta...

("You got the wrong guy, pal."

"He say you Blade Hunter!"

"Tell him I'm eating.")

You could always start off as a Politico...

"Get off my starship!"

Outlaw Tech/Gadgeteer. The ultimate Gearhead.

Mechanic/Outlaw Tech. I can fix anything. If I can't, I can build a better one. That shoots rockets.

Doctor / Assassin -- Inquisitor, torturer, interogator... the kind of guy that has a couple of really big dudes standing in the room with him as he takes a cleaver to your hands, popping off a little more of your fingers with each knuckle.

Maurader/Scholar - warrior poet?

Trader/Slicer/thief - Bill Gates?

Trader/scout/scholar - Lara croft?

Maurader/Scholar - warrior poet?

Or a mandalorian ;) ; waxing intellectual over all kinds of military history and the merits of hand to hand combat.

I kind of want to make a Doctor/Thief but I'm not sure that is even possible. Can I get a ruling from the crowd?

Of course, why wouldn't it? Not every world is going to have our thoughts about doctors and their responsibilities. Even those that do may have charlatans, or those who feel that the large pharma corps need to release more information about their drugs for the good of all. They may even steal to get it for larger dispersal. Sort of like robin hood for doctors.

Mercenary Soldier / Politico - Jesse Ventura

Maybe Maruader/Politico

One of our players went with Scoundrel/Thief.

So he's got good sneaking and skulduggery skills, and he invested a lot in his ranged (light). So he's rolling 3 yellows in combat, and can steal stuff and break into locks well.

I'm looking to make a Doctor that's also force sensitive on the Influence tree. That's gotta be good bedside manner, right?

I would do Thief/Assasin or Thief/Maurader.

One would be a sniper/ranged thief, the other would be a melee backstab rogue.

That being said, Assassin has some of its own stealth stuff, so if you want pure sneaking around, that is it.

That being said, melee weapons are quiet, so getting in close and stabbing them to death will make for less of an issue.

Then again....getting a modded rifle and sniping from extreme range also tends to be quiet =)

So, it depends on what exactly they want to do, but those are the two best options I would think.

i want to make a Wookie Doctor/Marauder. He can bash your brains in and heal you up.
