Named Pilots-Are they Worth the Points?

I don't know what I said that is being so misunderstood. Unless Mauler Mithel rolls 4 hits, you will be rolling 5 total dice when at range one. Its not that hard folks. Sorry for being kinda annoyed.

Even I'm italian I can understand that rolling 4 dice and re-roll one of them it's different from rolling 5 dice. I kkonw what you mean: at the end of the story you've rolled 5 dice, but the maximum damage it's still 4 hits.

Rolling 5 means that you can inflict up to 5 hits; rolling 4 and re-roll a fifth die means that you can damage up to 4 hits.

Does it sond so hard to figure out?

I think the confusion is you are mixing up terms that are clearly defined in the rulebook. An attack requires one dice for each point of firepower on the ship. An x-wing rolls three dice, and if they have a target lock, they can re-roll any of those three dice they want to. They don't get to roll six dice if the first three dice are misses or eyes.

Likewise, mauler gets four dice for his attack at range one. If he chooses to, he may re-roll one of those four dice. He does not get an additional dice. There are only ever four dice involved with Maulers attack on his side, not four dice, and a fifth if I don't like one of the results.

That's what I said.

That's what I said.

No, you said five dice. When you say five dice, everyone else interperates it as your rolling five dice all at the same time.

How does everyone interpret it that way after ive explained no less than 3 times that i rolled 4 dice every time i shot with mauler mithel, then always got to re-roll one of them, hence rolling another dice. Were not in kindergarten. It very annoying that people are arguing the fact that 5 dice eventually rolled across that table. I dont care what your verbage is, 5 dice did roll across that table every single time Mauler Mithel attacked. That cannot be denied. And I never said one single time that I added all five dice together now did I. So I dont know why people keep arguing it. Come to my game and watch me roll 5 dice across the table and still be well within the rules of the game. Just beacause its a reroll DOES NOT mean its not a roll. Holy Jebus.

I think that's the problem. if you re-roll one of those dice, you are not rolling "another" die...you are re-rolling one of the same 4 dice you already rolled.

I realize it's semantics with the language and terms used, but i think that's where your confusion is being located.

if you are re-rolling, you are not rolling another die....you are simply re-rolling a die you've already chosen to use for this attack.

I think he is trolling us. Subtle, but still...

Lol this is ridiculous. He doesn't understand. Let him think and say what he wants it doesn't matter. Anyways.... named pilots. Let's get back to that discussion lol.

Named pilots: F*ck yeah!

Named Pilots make my game experience better. Either on a canonical level, or from a gameplay level.

The trick is trying to juggle which ones you want to include in your squadron before you run out of points.

I like a mix of unique and generic pilots. I've been testing 4 Rookie Pilots with Proton Torpedoes and it's a doozy of a squad to get right. So far the low pilot skill has been killer, so I'm really appreciating all that a named pilot can offer.

I agree that named pilots are a way more fun way to go. I would much rather say "My Luke is firing at your Vader" than "this guy is firing at that guy with a 4 on his chest". The names bring out the nerd in me and make me feel just plain good. When i hear the name Han Solo, I think, "wow that guy is cool." Or "Holy crap, Han Solo is shooting at me". When i hear Outer Rim Smuggler, I think "Meh". (Bad example in picking the one ship that actually has different stats when you make the switch from named to generic brand, but Han is the coolest) If i wasn't concerned about winning I would bring named pilots all day long. Not saying you can't win with all named, just that i think the general consensus is that named pilots are best when mixed with some low level wingmen.

I almost wish FFG had designed this game with named pilots only, and maybe a few more for each ship. Biggs would be PS2, Garven PS4, Luke PS7, Wedge PS9. Throw in Corran Horn and Porkins somewhere in the list. Man would that have been fun. Of course you Tie swarm players can now eviscerate me and my idea in the posts below me.

I love my TIE Swarm, but I also like to play my swarm with the 6 named TIE Pilots for the reasons you mentioned above.

Soontir Fel with Stealth and Push the Limits is amazing but at 33 points, he's almost as much as 3 TIE Fighters. Is he worth three TIE Fighters? In the right circumstances, actually, yes.

Any ship in the right circumstance is good. The problem I see most people make is just throwing things together cause they seen cool. Named pilots are great and all and I love them, but to make an effective unit sometimes you just need to bring more guns to bear.I love my Luke/Wedge/Y-Wing. But it is not feasable to win a majority of the time unfortunately. A well rounded squad played well and proactive not reactive will still lose but your record with it will be quite good. Anybody can beat anybody in this game and that is what makes it so good. Even seasoned veterans have to keep rethinking how they do things.
