Episode 15 of the Order 66 Podcast (Part 2) is UP, with Sam Stewart!

By GM Chris, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Finally able to complete and edit the second half of our epic interview with Jay Little and Sam Stewart - and it is now up! In this second half, we continue with discussion of combat questions, then talk all about Starships, and the Force (along with a few general questions that were too much fun not to ask). We wipe our brows for the conclusion of way too much epic. A big thank you to Sam and Jay for taking their time for all of us.

And a big thanks to all of you for sending in so many excellent questions for the Devs. There was a lot we couldn't get to, due to sheer amount of time (or questions being about things the devs couldn't speak to). Apologies if your question didn't get answered. :( Hopefully, we'll have the devs back on soon!

You can find the episode on iTunes, or download it directly from our feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Order66

(Direct Download Link: feedproxy.google.com/~r/Order66/~3/6xVFYHnIIBc/episode15.mp3)

And don't forget! Only a few days left to pledge to the Order 66 Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/435243061/the-new-order-66-podcast), nab some awesome electronic SWAG, and reserve a half-price ticket to GAMERNATIONCON, March 14!

Suite! Looking forward to it -- the Q&A in Part 1 was really helpful answering a lot of good questions.

Sweet!

I just found this podcast due to these threads here. I think it's great that we have a podcast specific to this game that has a direct line to the developers.

However, I do have a bit of feedback. I know this isn't the official forums for the podcast but to be honest, I'm too lazy to go and make another account on some other forum - especially one with a color scheme that gives me a headache.

My feedback is as follows:

1. Levels. I don't mean the RPG kind, I mean the audio kind. If you want to sound more professional, fix and watch your levels.

2. Levels.

3. Levels.

4. Eliminate, even just reduce the amount of incidental noise. By that I mean the guffaws, the snorts, the half-chuckles. In an audio only format - this does not translate well.

5. Pacing #1. Eliminate, even reduce the amount of filler words. Such as "ummms" or repeating what someone else just said in a "funnier" way. These last two points are things that work well in live conversation but not in an audio-only format.

6. Pacing #2. Lose the inside jokes. These don't mean anything to a broader audience and the hosts tend not to know when a joke naturally ends and you lapse into #5 - "filler" talk and #4 - noises until someone goes "aaaanyway...".

Seriously, this is a great idea for a podcast and the CONTENT is spot on. Tighten up these few things and you have not just a great idea, but a great podcast. For inspiration of how levels, bumpers, and professional pacing work well, watch or listen to any show on the TwiT network.

Which we always welcome, sir.

This is a continual struggle with guests calling in via Skype. It's also an artifact of equipment that is a bit old (and, as you're no doubt aware) new equipment of decent quality is extremely expensive. Thankfully, our recent (and still going) kickstarter has provided us - through listener support - the ability to upgrade to extremely good, brand new equipment and move away from software-dependent multi-channel sound mixing. So that's coming, and we're really looking forward to it.

As you're a new listener - don't let the "15 episodes on the feed" fool you. :D The Order 66 Podcast has been broadcasting for over 5 and a half years. (We reset the feed when moving away from WotC's Star Wars Saga Edition, to FFG). We actually won an ENnie in 2008 for Best Podcast. And we recorded 167 shows prior to resetting the feed. (Incidentally, all our Saga Edition episodes are still archived here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/order66saga, for those interested. But for god sake - ignore Episode 1. We were serious newbies back then, LOL.)

It is this history and experience that opened the door to us getting in touch with FFG at an extremely early stage. (To FFGs credit, they've been more supportive than we could have hoped for.)

4. Eliminate, even just reduce the amount of incidental noise. By that I mean the guffaws, the snorts, the half-chuckles. In an audio only format - this does not translate well.

So - this is partly the result of aforesaid equipment, partly the fact that we can't control the on-air reactions of our guests, sometimes. ;) But largely, this is because of our chosen format of 'casting. We broadcast (and record) a LIVE show. And we enjoy that. Scores of listeners watch/listen live as we broadcast, and can chat with us real-time. We rarely, if ever, do any post-show editing. Beds and drops are fired on the fly, just like real radio. While this does have its hiccups (such as occasional sound artifacts we don't want), it's pretty much the only way for 2 amateurs (with kids and jobs) to produce a 2 hour show with any frequency.

Additionally - realize that the "live radio show" format is what we're going for and always have tried to do. :) Which means that we will most intentionally chuckle, guffaw, and... be human. The intent is for it to be a live, around-the-table-style conversation (which our listeners will, hopefully, feel a part of). Some listeners (literally, I can count them on one hand) have told us they don't like this format; but the vast majority have expressed the opposite opinion to us. [shrug] Some people like talk radio. Some don't. But it keeps it entertaining for the majority of our listener base (and us).

Your point is well taken, sir! But again - the "live conversation" format IS actually what we do, in both the show tone, and the very literal sense of a live broadcast recording. I do have a bad habit of "ummmms". But what can I say? We're not professionals - just amateurs. Inside jokes don't happen too often, I don't think, but we ARE actively trying to reduce that. (It's compounded by the fact that we have been 'casting for over 5 years - and like any long-running radio show, inside jokes tend to develop a life of their own.) ^_^ (Still - that's good feedback, sir - and something we WILL work to change.)

We really appreciate your listener-ship, and hope to retain it.

And I do encourage you (all of you) to head to our forums (despite its color scheme ;)) at http://www.d20radio.com/forums or email me at [email protected] with any suggestions - especially around content and desired topics of discussion. Our listeners do (and have for many years now) make this podcast what it is. We talk about what YOU want us to discuss. We cover the questions YOU have. :)

At the height of Saga Edition (about 3 years ago), we had over 6,500 unique downloads a week - and with the "death" of Saga Edition, listener-ship naturally took gradual decline, to the point about a year ago that we had around 1,000 uniques. It was expected. But thanks to you all (and FFGs continual support), we're breaching 4,000, as of Episode 14, and I find that remarkable. It almost scares me to think how much more growth is coming down the pipe.

You all are amazing! And you're the one and only reason we 'cast.

Peace, Love, and Good Gaming,

GMC

Excellent discourse, GM Chris. You can count me among your new listeners (I have the podcast loaded in DoggCatcher now). I appreciate you taking the time to consider my feedback, even here, not on your forums.

I think once the levels are hammered out, I think the incidentals will become much more tolerable from my end. I did not realize this was broadcast live or the history of the podcast. So in that context, perhaps with your efforts at becoming better and responding to feedback as you are and my efforts at just continuing to listen - I'm sure we'll come to an agreeable point that will gain you another long-time listener (perhaps more as my players tune in.)

Again, thank you for responding and it's good to know the history, the context and the things you are doing to improve. Good work, I look forward to more.

nope...still not listening. :D

Hm... Sam said that Sniper Shot doens't work in starships. Fair enough, that makes sense if it's based on personal combat range.

But if that's true, then why does the Advanved Targeting Array, which is a starship upgrade, have a mod of "Innate Talent (Sniper Shot)"?

And to you, sir! :) I hope we can continue to improve - and provide you (all of you) content that you'll enjoy.

BUT... [dum dum DUUUUUM]... be sure to tell us what you want us to talk about! (Yeah, yeah, beating a dead horse.) You let US know what content you want featured - and we'll make it happen!
