To Get Into That Star Wars Mood...

By Simon Retold, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

If you're trying to get into a Star Wars mood, obviously the original trilogy is the best way to go. Beyond that, the prequels and the two animated Clone Wars series. The question is, which one? This is more of an academic question, because Netflix doesn't have Star Wars: Clone Wars on disk, so the only ones I'm going to get a chance to watch are the Star Wars: The Clone Wars CGI movie and episodes. But if you had to pick one or the other to get into a Star Wars mood, would it be...

  1. Star Wars: Clone Wars

    - or -
  2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (including the feature film)

... and why?

Definitely the Gendy Tartakovsky take.

So much more mythic and epic.

Plus the man knows when to shut up and slow things down a bit.

Well, I'd have to say neither. The Clone Wars (both the sh*tty film and the quite good series) revolve around Jedi and there are no rules for Jedi in EotE (yet) that can capture what they do in these examples. I'd say watch Episodes IV, V, and VI, maybe throw in some Firefly too.

But if forced to choose between the two I'd go with the series seaon two and on, but skip the film.

Edit: sorry I thought the first choice was the Lucas garbage. I haven't seen the one you linked to yet, I'll find it though...

I don't know I'd choose either, but I guess it really depends what you see the star wars mood as. That's not meant to be a bash against them or anything, they're just different from what I think the mood of Edge is supposed to be.

The older one is 15 minute shots of Jedi badassery. It's great for that, but there's not a lot of greater context for a lot of it. The Ventress vs Anakin fight is particularly awesome.

I've really only watched the first season and the odd rerun of the recent show. I'd say more story than the other, but it's at about the same quality as the prequels. So... Yeah.

Very different shows, and both very different from the perspectives in Edge of the Empire.

For this game specifically A New Hope and maybe Empire are all I'm gonna watch for inspiration. I think the last 13 years have given me a Clone Wars overdose. Need rehab. 12 step program for lightsaber fetish.

But, to answer your question more directly ... definitely the Tartakovsky series. Much like Samurai Jack, his art style, presentation, and story flow definitely put me in a good place. The newest Clone Wars was great, don't get me wrong, but I felt that it was directed more at a different demographic that I'm probably no longer a part of :) Cheers.

How come people get annoyed by to many lightsabers but never tire of blasters?

To answer the OP I would say any and all Star Wars will get me in the mood. I haven't seen much of the CW series but plan to pickup the complete series on Blue Ray when it comes out.

Out of the choice you have given, (2) The Clone Wars. Can't stand the first one, Clone Wars. But I do like The Clone Wars, apart from a few episodes, (ones featuring Jar Jar mainly) they have the weekly serial feel the Lucas is supposed to be after when writing Star Wars.

But ...

If getting into the Star Wars mood for running Edge of the Empire I wouldn't pick either.

A New Hope and Firefly every time!

May the goram shiny be with you!

Because you can't beat a good blaster by your side kid.

I really didn't necessarily mean in the Edge of the Empire mood. Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Firefly, Serenity, and even some of Battlestar Galactica are my go-to shows for getting into the gritty mood specifically for this game.

I've seen some of the Genndy Tartakovsky series. Being a fan of Samurai Jack, I loved the artwork, and the Jedi badassery was pretty amazing, too. I hadn't seen the CGI show, and didn't know if it was any good.

Of the two options, I'd lean more toward The Clone Wars, particularly the episodes focusing on the Bounty Hunters and criminal elements over the Jedi and Clone Troopers.

While Clone Wars was a good series, and very entertaining, they seriously overpowered the jedi in that series, and looked at it as if the Jedi were the ultimate fighting machines (reaching a peak in the infamous battle between Mace Windu and the droid army - with Mace winning). With the way that series was portrayed, the jedi didn't need any backup or allies, they were good enough to take on an entire army on their own. This doesn't fit in with the Prequel trilogy (where Jedi were shown to be about the equal of a squad of battle droids) or the prequel trilogy (where the Jedi shown only had a slight advantage over their equivalents, usually in being able to make much more difficult shots reliably). The Clone Wars kept the Jedi at the right level of power, where they were the elite leaders, but still required backup from the Clone Troopers under their command.

Just my 2 credits on the matter.

Personally I thing to CGI series is good. For a start they managed to make Anakin a dark heroic and interesting non-whinny character!

Not all the episodes are good, but the majority are. Some are spoilt (IMHO) by being focused on Jar Jar or the droids.

As well as giving Anakin character, they manage to do the same for the clones, that's no small feat.

A lot of Star Wars fans don't like The Clone Wars movie but compared to The Phantom Menace it's alright.

Definitely The Clone Wars.

I can't wait to pick up the Seasons 1-5 box set on Blue-Ray. Still cannot believe, or accept, that Disney canceled it in the middle of the 5th season.

Go on YouTube and do a search for starwars timeline records-it worked for me.

Your problem there is hang ups about what people will think of you if they know you enjoy that sort of thing.

People like Tartakovsky are able to throw off worries about people judging them for their fantasies, and so can create, well, fantasies that are cool.

A great way to get into the Edge of the Empire, play the Video games! LucasArts had some wonderful star wars games over the years.

Shadows of the Empire

Dark Forces 2

Rogue Squardron 2

Jedi Outcast

Sidestepping the question a bit, but my favourite way to get into the Star Wars mood is listening to the soundtracks and reading the 'Art Of' books.

I really enjoy The Clone Wars CGI series (and movie). I actually watch it to inspire my SW adventures, and supplement it with a dose of video games. Because of the era that EotE falls in, I would recommend The Force Unleashed and Force Unleashed II, since they happen around the same time frame. The original Han Solo novels (Han Solo at Star's End, Han Solo and the Lost Legacy, and Han Solo's Revenge) and Lando Calrissian novels (Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu, Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon, and Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of Thonboka) are also great sources of inspiration, as is A.C. Crispin's Han Solo trilogy (The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, Rebel Dawn).

Definitely The Clone Wars.

I thought it was at the end of the 5th season,

Blaster are clumsy and random.

Oh my god you literally read my mind.

I'd recommend you watch Clone Wars, followed by The Clone Wars. The Clone Wars series is great in its own way, since it lets a lot of the less-featured Jedi that everyone loves have moments and episodes of greatness. It also showcases a lot of things, including homeworlds like Toydaria, Rodia, and the Togrutan homeworld of Shili, that you don't see anywhere else. There are some things that conflict with pre-established canon, but it is definitely worth it. The action is pretty great, and Anakin's voice actor portrays him better than Hayden did, which I find a bit hilarious :P.

Not only that, but can you believe the amount of hours Matt Lanter has over Hayden Christensen onscreen in as Anakin? Everyone who's seen it knows he plays a better Anakin, his wit and charm are believable and you'd totally get why the 501st follow him into battle because they want to and not because they have to.

But if you ask the public, no one remembers Matt Lanter's name.

Thus the eternal curse of the voice actor, versus the face actor. They only have one sense to be recognized by, instead of two. :(

Oooh... and there's a new series coming out next fall, positioned a little closer to A New Hope.
