World Generation?

By SmokeGunner, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have ordered the rulebook and should have it in a few days but thought I'd ask here whilst I'm waiting if there is a world generation system in the rulebook? If not, is this one of the key things on your wishlist for the game?

I know quite a bit about star system generation already from things like GURPS Space (which has an incredibly detailed and scientifically accurate star system generation chapter) but I will have to temper this knowledge due to the fact that scientific accuracy is probably a low priority when it comes to Star Wars and the SWEotE game system.

Having said that, I look forward to seeing some interesting non-canon Star Wars worlds created for SWEotE.

I wrote a small C program ages ago that created planets according to the rules in GURPS Space. I don't think I ever finished it but here is some sample output.

This sounds like something we'll find in the exploration supplement that's coming. I'm sure there's lots of unofficial stuff as well that other people can and are pointing to.

One thing that is difficult in a setting like this is units of distance, weight, etc. It's supposed to be set in a galaxy that isn't even the Milky Way, so it would be an anachronism to use terms like "sol", "km", "AU" etc. Of course you could use the old sci-fi trope of calling everything "standard", e.g. 0.75 standard star mass etc., but it's a bit clumsy. Does anyone know if Star Wars has it's own fully fleshed out units for distance, weight, mass, etc?

None I've ever heard. I don't recall any references to weights and measures in the movies, and the RPGs have always used metric measurements.

Thanks for that link, Fang. I also really liked the vehicle chart you put together.

The Star Wars galaxy appears to use metric in formal situations.

Though don't think of it as anachronistic or out of place. In the same way that the characters are really speaking "English" when they talk, if they say something like "ten kilometers," that's assumed to be converted from whatever unit of measurement they actually use.

"I used to bullseye womprats from my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters." Luke uses metric.

The EU novels etc seem to mix units of measure, including time pretty freely. A New Hope gives time In minutes and seconds.

I think it is easier to use the same units the players are familiar with rather than making up new ones. The Death Star will be in range in 15 hadrazodes is just awkward.

No, I am sure they speak French, or at least, in my games, they do! ;)

Aha! Good catch. I salute your superior geek fu.

You are very welcome. Thank you for the compliments. :-)
