8 TIE Swarm in 4 Battle VIDEO Batrep!

By Stormtrooper721, in X-Wing Battle Reports

There are four separate battles in this video batrep: my "Dark Curse" and 7 Academy Pilots vs a "Han Shoots First!" squad, then vs a Firespray and 3 TIE Interceptors, and then twice against 4 A-Wings each with an Assault Missile! These four battles took place on July 27, 2013 at GameKnight in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Here is the video:

Tie swarms shouldnt be that good. I have destroyed tie swarms with my wedge/luke/ywing. Full a wing squadrons actually arent that good. The first battle against han shoots first wasnt played well at all. The xwings shoulda broke off and hit the flank and the ties woulda dropped like flies. I have fought tie swarms with 8 4 times and only lost once because of my own bonehead move.

You're right. I was quite blessed in all four battles.

I won the first one barely and only by not pursuing Han in the last round, in the second I won only because Jess did a Koiogran 3 rather than a 5 which would have put her TIE Interceptors right behind my TIEs rather than right in front like the K3 did, and in the last two battles I used the same tactic: maneuver until we were just outside Range 3 and then punch forward full speed into a close-range battle where the A-Wing's Assault Missiles couldn't fire - if Jim had done Koiogran 5s, his A-Wings would have blown right past my TIE Fighters and shot my TIEs up from behind.

Squad build is important in this game as are dice rolls but doing the right maneuver at the right time is also key and the problem is that the "right" maneuver depends entirely upon what maneuver your opponent is about to do and that's what makes this game so suspenseful: my opponent and I are just outside of Range 3. If I punch forward 5 and he moves forward 2 then I win, but if he Koiogran 5s, then he comes right in behind me and I lose. However, if I only move forward two and he Koiogran 5s and ends right in front of me with his back to me I win, but if I only move forward 2 and he only moves forward 2 and nails me with missiles I lose.

You see, the move you make ends up being either "brilliant" or "terrible" depending completely upon what your opponent has chosen but which you can't know until she or he flips over her or his maneuver dial. And, as in three of the four games here, it was a 50-50 guess at times as to what my opponents were going to do. One of the most often phrases I hear in this game when maneuver dials are flipped is, "**** it! I knew I should have done the other thing!"

It took me a while and I'm still not good at it but I try to anticipate his moves in a way that I see him playing. I've lost a few times soley because I tried to force my formation across the table. I do like how yours were each in their own lane and that you ended up getting so many guns to bear. I don't care how good you role. You won't win unless you can shoot. Against ties you have to stay out of the middle. If you go for the ones to the side and then fly past them you can wreck them. A wings going straight in was suicide. With your tactics he had no chance. Even if he did get the missiles off. I lost with my wedge Luke and gold squadron mainly because I didn't understand to not go up the gut against 8 ties.

Also a with a squadron of awings he lost the game before he even put his ships on the board. A wings are only for support. I think two of them with x wings would dominate. At the very least you have two bad ass attackers and two "kiters".

If the A-Wings had gone 5 straight on turn one they would have been able to get their missiles away. Whether this would have changed the results or not would have depended on the die rolls. A-Wings depend on that initial missile strike to do enough damage to the enemy so that their 2 attack doesn't have to work as hard afterwards.

Arvel is definitely not the guy I would choose to take against a swarm. His ability is much more potent when facing few enemies. That's 4 points your opponent could have put into skills on the Green Squadron guys.
