Daario Naharis and Valar Morghulis

By Arromir, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Just had a couple questions come up in the last game I played with my bro, and perhaps somebody will be able to clarify.

Daario Naharis states, "At the beginning of dominance phase, discard 1 gold from any player's gold pool or discard Daario Naharis from play." Would this happen before or after the gold is counted for dominance?

And the Valar Morghulis plot card states, "When revealed, kill all characters in play." Since it does not say (Cannot be saved) are you allowed to use any duplicates you may have in play to save your characters?

Before. It is passively activated by the Dominance phase starting - the first "game action" of the Dominance phase. So it takes place before the second "game action" of the phase, which is counting standing STR/gold and awarding the power.

Yep, with dupes or other save effects, too. You can save from any kill effect that is not specifically designated "cannot be saved." Any specific reason for thinking you couldn't save?

Not sure why actually. I think we weren't sure if the duplicates got discarded before they could be used.

Ah. I was asking to see if there was an underlying question or whether it was just a definition thing.

The way the timing in this game is set up, a save effect (including dupes) actually interrupts the initiation and resolution of the kill effect (at least as far as that one character is concerned). You use the save effect before the character ever actually dies, so attachments and dupes (which don't actually count as attachments) would not be discarded before they can be used.
