Minions and critical hits ???

By JP_JP, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

At page 390 of the Core Rulebook, it says that "if a group of minions suffers a critical injury, it suffers one minion's worth of wounds..."

I was wondering if you can down more then one minion with one hit ???

Exemple : I wield a lightsaber (dam 10) against a 3-minion group of stormtroopers with wound threshold of 5 each, for a group total of 15 wound threshold. Let's say I roll at least one success and one advantage, so that my lightsaber will do 11 damage and also crit. Then I would do 16 total damage (base 10 + 1 for success + 5 for crit) in one shot and down the whole group with a single swing.

Is that right ???
Thanks.

Sure, that works for me. Think of Episode I and how often you see Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan cut down two or three battle droid minions with ease.

(Also, don't conflate "one attack roll" with "one swing of the lightsaber" or "one shot of a blaster".)

The consensus seems to be that you first apply the critical hit and remove one minion, then you apply the normal attack damage to the remaining minions, if that helps at all.

next question, then... do you apply the extra wounds before or after Soak? because Stormies have a Soak of 5...

You can only use a Triumph like this if you hit and do damage, so you're just adding on top of the total, so the Soak doesn't matter.

Another question just came to mind...

In my first exemple, if I score multiple advantages, does each critical hit trigger removes another minion, or it just doesn't do anything to trigger multiple crits on minions ??

Technically, the rules wouldn't allow you to trigger more than one critical on a minion group, since it is still technically just a single attack. However, if you/your GM allows it, since it is a group of multiple people, you might consider allowing multiple crits even if you aren't using autofire, dual wielding, or using linked weapons.

But, if you are triggering multiple crits either because you are allowing it, or because you're using one of those abilities, yes: multiple crits would lift one extra minion!

As a GM, I'd allow you to deal one critical injury, but if you rolled multiple Triumphs, I would allow each of them to take out one Minion... because it's Triumph and if you get more than one of those on a roll, you've earned something awesome happening.

How about Lethal Blows? They make crits more powerful, but is this talent useful against minions at all?

Unfortunately, lethal blows doesn't really help much against minions, since they automatically die by crits. However, thematically, it can allow you to convince your GM to describe your slaughter in more gruesome detail, which the GM might allow to spill over as "strain" damage to the minion group (which just acts like normal damage) as they see their friends massacred with decisive and unforgiving force.

There are a couple of things that affect critical hit results and thus are largely wasted against minion groups. The vicious quality is another one of those.

I guess if your party has a character or characters who excel at dealing deadly critical hits, maybe they should take on the tougher enemies while the weaker combatants can deal with the minions. It's one of the nice things about minion groups, actually... they allow PCs who are not heavily focused on combat to still knock down a few enemies and feel like they're contributing.
