Nightsister energy bow

By fjw70, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I just saw a preview of he nightsister trilogy from the clone wars TV show (I plan to get the blue rays eventually but so far I am not that familiar with the series) and I saw these energy bows that the nightsisters were using.

How do they work? Do they have physical ammo like the bow casters or do they work like the bow from he D&D cartoon (which according to Wookiepedia was the inspirations for these weapons)?

That was never resolved, I don't think I saw them pull anything physical, they just draw the bow and it's there. I like the art, but not the concept.

I love the TCW series, I even like them better than the movies (gasp!)...having said that, I found at least 1/3 of the episodes intolerable, and even with the ones I like you have to watch it realizing they are playing fast and loose with time. It's archetypes-to-the-max. But the nightsisters, along with the whole Ventress story arc, is well worth it.

Thanks. I am trying to play up the fantasy elements of the setting and was going to include these in my game. Sounds like they could be modeled pretty well with blaster carbine stats.

I've actually seen some interesting regular bow and Energy bow concepts in various fan supplements. I believe you can find one such template in the Freebooters supplement found here:

Obviously you can make up your own or modify it as you will, or you could just use it like a blaster carbine, like you said. Any idea would work really.

I was thinking much the same.

Just call the energy bow a blaster carbine in terms of stats and call it a day.

Yes, I prefer to reuse existing stats rather than make something new when I can.

Endrik, thanks for that link! That's some amazing stuff in there, for sure. Definitely gonna use it in my upcoming games. Anyone know of any other links to great sites that host EotE stuff?

As for the post about the Nightsister's bows, having just seen those episodes for the first time this week, my immediate thoughts were "how can I stat those up". Given the Nightsisters' connection to the Dark Side, it's reasonable enough to assume that the bows use the same energy crystals that power a lightsaber and therefore could do some of the same stuff. So my thoughts were that it would be it's own skill (like lightsaber), but not sure if it's different enough to register for it's own unique skill. So, I'm thinking a *bow* skill could cover it? But then again, why not just use melee for lightsaber fighting in that case, so perhaps it is its own skill. But I was in the mind of about 7 damage, breach 1, vicious 1, medium range.

Were there things on the show that support the breach 1 or is that just to make it like a lightsaber?

Wondering the same, so I watched the show again. I don't think the show supports breach. They take several shots at B1 battle droids, and don't take them down. Then again, a few hit some commando droids, they were disposed with in one shot. So you might argue for pierce.

I could see Pierce 1, maybe, to set it aside from a Blaster Carbine.

But then I'd also bump the price and the rarity, to compensate for a fairly powerful ability.

I'd almost suggest looking at the wookie bowcaster as a starting model, but instead of it being cumbersome, there could be a quality similar that might use agility to offset. I certainly realize its not the same, but it is an approximate in terms of how a weapon unique to a specific culture functions within the game.

I wasn't looking to use the energy bow as a unique weapon for a specific culture. The idea is that it would be a common weapon in certain areas of the outer rim. The nightsister weapon was just the inspiration.

My stats were to make it like a lightsaber, but ranged and not as powerful. That's assuming the Nightsisters to be Dark Side users, and able to craft a weapon that has similarities to the lightsaber.

Part of why the lightsaber gets the ability to slice through things is that it's a continuous energy loop. The core tech itself is based upon blaster technology, only instead of being a single short-term packet of energy being hurled at the enemy, the lightsaber is a continuous effect. In fact, the basic principles of the lightsaber have been likened to a magnetic bottle containing a field of super-heated plasma; the cutting effect happens when the magnetic bottle is temporarily breached upon contact with a solid object. So using a crystal in no way imparts the ability to penetrate right through solid objects like a hot knife through butter. After all, common Star Wars blasters are often noted as using "focusing crystals" as part of how they work.

So a Nightsaber bow should in now way have that same kind of penetration power. At most, I'd give it a rank (maybe 2) of Pierce, with the trade-off of the weapon having a much higher Rarity rating to reflect how uncommon it is, but otherwise.... it's a blaster carbine with a fancy appearance and odd way of functioning in the setting.

Yea, I had forgotten about the "physics" behind how lightsabers worked, so that does make sense.

So a Nightsaber bow

Ok that would be a so much cooler name for the lightsabers carried by the Sith. The Jedi use their lightsabers, while the Sith use their nightsabers. Hmm, may have to use this.

Oh man, they missed out on a GOLDEN opportunity.

Glad my typing goof could lead to such an inspiration :D
