I might be subjecting my poor players to this; sticking each Role, Background, and Role on face-down notecards and having each player draw two sets. While this could lead to a few wonky bits (Feral - Adeptus Mechanicus - Hierophant comes to mind, as does the "majority of psykers are Unsanctioned" issue), does this sound appealling to anyone?
Randomized CharGen
Aside from the "wait, my sanctioned psyker doesn't have a Psy rating?" issue, I think it would work fine. Maybe a custom card for the psyker combination/types you want to make common occurances.
My only issue would be with the "unsanctioned psyker" character. Being unsanctioned can really complicate your life and is not something I would personally enjoy having assigned 'randomly'.
I agree- as the rules are right now in this specific iteration, I wouldn't be for a lot of randomness rolling.
Even though that system was horrific in DH 1.0 [No adepts from hive worlds? Really?] at least none of the options got you killed at start.
Not a lot of them though [Looking at you, divination with mutation ]
Appealing, not really. Acceptable and maybe fun for a short, not too serious campaign? Maybe. Nonsensical character paths don't really mesh well in the rigid Wh40k universe, although most options could be made to work together. Again. the major exception is psykers/AAT. They pretty much have to go together, or you end up with a character that is a heretic from the start, or a background that doesn't make any sense.
A random background chart would certainly be fun to go with the random home world. Not too hard to work out yourself though I suppose.
