A question of conversion

By Naviward, in Dark Heresy Second Edition Beta

Something that seems to be a running theme in player concerns on this forum is the lack of backward compatibility.

My question to the group would be what could FFG do to make this easier using the rules we have at present (no just make it 1.5 comments please, we already have a thread for that).

My first suggestion would be to have some form of conversion guide for weapons and character from System 1 to System 2, similar to the bits they put into rogue trader onwards and the psychic systems.

For example:-

* Give +5 damage to all accurate weapons

* Increase the toughness of all enemies by 20%, e.t.c.

* Average the lores known by the character and make that their Remembrancer skill level.

Its just not possible, dispite the fact both have similarities at the moment it would take massive work to try and port any element over since the combat system works differently and character stats, while starting the same, explode out later game. This means that while low level opponents will have similar stats higher level human ones will not and this messes up the scale for tougher opponents that get squeezed out the top.

The lack of wounds also make differentiating large enemies impossible at the moment without simply large amounts of defense but due to the weapon damages this would simply make them immune to most weapons. Take a Chaos Space Marine for example (and dont tell me the game isn't designed for Space Marines because it allows for Inquisitors so it should allow for some of their worst enemies) apart from a high toughness and armour probably 7 now what sets them apart from a human with T80. If you double that T they cant be hurt or if you add to it its not that impressive.

So yeah as it stand you cant really convert, maybe if they straighten out weapon damages then it might be possible to do for them but at the moment the weapon damages do not even mesh with their own damage system so who knows.

In terms of conversion I would

1- Get rid of the AP system, going back to the previous one.

2- Use all of the other weapons as is- maybe the combat will be a less deadly, as it assumes a base TB defense of 3 or something- but it would be something to work with.

3- Anything with unnatural stats from the previous games get +10 to their stat per unnatural.

Now to the interesting part- backgrounds, origins and those tables.

I would make "Elite advance tables" that grant the other talents and specialties at special discount prices, without necessarily going trough the talent tree's regular path, not to mention one unique talent or ability per elite advance at the end of it [Moritat's "The reaping" for example.]

Origins, I would give them an extra ability and some choice to make them more flavorful and adjust the starting gear based on DH and their equivalent classes.
