New Trolfens preview is up. New Chars revealed

By RagsMckay, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I can't wait for this. It can't come soon enough.

Not sure if this is the right forum but how many more expansions do you think we will get before this game is complete? And when we do get to that point will it actually be complete or will we go to 3rd edition?

If I remember correctly D1e had five expansions, two of which were campaign style expansions and 3 "regular" expansions.

Roganna the Shade's heroic feat seems really nice to go in conjunction with a Spiritspeaker's Cloud of Mist skill. (Action: Exhaust this card. While this card is exhausted , each attack that targets a space within 3 spaces of you misses unless the the attacker spends 1 surge. Cost: 1 Fatigue.)

Add in a Heavy Cloak on either of them and you've got a nice little defensive aura.

Augur Grisom's heroic feat feels a little underwhelming however. I could be very wrong though, depends on how he plays with a Healer class.

So, must we expect two other expansions before D2e is discontinued and D3e is created? ;)

As many as they can think of ideas for. I'd expect they have at least another 3 years in them, which would be 6 more expansions at the rate they're going right now. I don't think you can really predict how many there will be, though.

FFG doesn't generally publish new editions just for the sake of publishing new editions. If they go into a new edition, it's because they've recognized the need for sweeping mechanical changes that can't properly be addressed with an expansion.

In the case of D1E, it was the campaign mode. D1E was originally designed to be a series of one-shot quests, where the heroes reset to basic powers after each quest. There was a thin narrative plot connecting quests, but all the gear and gold and so on was reset at the end of each quest. The fans demanded more.

FFG tried to provide what the fans demanded with the "Advanced Campaign" expansions - and these were an admirable effort, don't get me wrong. However, they were still based in the core 1E rules as an expansion, so there was only so much they could do to provide the continuity and character growth fans wanted. The rules were convoluted and difficult to keep track of.

Eventually, they recognized that what they really needed was a new edition. One with a proper campaign mode built in from square one. Hence, D2E. They didn't go into second edition because they decided they wanted to screw everybody and make all the old stuff obsolete. They went into second edition because first edition was collapsing under the weight of a core mechanic that was not designed for what the fans wanted the game to be.

I have no doubt that FFG will continue making expansions for D2E for as long as they have ideas to work with and profits to prove it works. They are a business after all. But if and when they run out of steam, it doesn't automatically mean D3E is coming up next. That will ultimately depend on how big the flaws in D2E are at that time, and whether they have ideas to fix it.

Consider Runebound as an example. It has gone through 2 editions and is basically dead in the water as far as new expansions go. They haven't announced a 3E yet, though. I'm not saying it will never happen, but really 2E is a solid game as-is. It doesn't need improvements, so they aren't in a hurry to reinvent the wheel. Twilight Imperium had only one expansion for a good 5 years, and then it got another one just when no one expected it to, because I guess they came up with enough new ideas to make it worthwhile.

To contribute a post that's actually on-topic, I really like Rogana the Shade. For those who remember 1E, her Heoric Feat is basically Group Shadowcloak. Nice.

Reprinting the Runebound games would be nice, if FFG's happy with the game (instead of making a 3rd edition).

I hope Descent 2E continues for a long while... I'll buy any expansion they release, I'm not going to lie.

I gonna buy them all too.

But I'm a bit disapointed since heroes of 2nd are more classical, often classic human dwark orc.

Descent V1 and Runebound used to have some funny and different heroes, like a dead one, a lizardman thing, a big foot, ect...

So, I hope descent v2 will have some stuff like that, even if I'm aware that for selling more, they choose to take less risks. Too bad.

I agree.

If the system works and sells well, there would be no reason to change for another edition.

I do believe that D2e's format is bound to attract more people than the more heavy D1e.

I 100% agree! I mean, it's nice that we get quite a few orcs, elves, dwarves, and such... but there were such unique races in the first edition. I hope we see more of that in future expansions.

I also think that since they release so little (in terms of heroes/monsters) per expansion, they can continue making them for quite some time. I mean, the classes might end up getting a bit too similar, but really... once there's around 5 classes each, I'd be happy with just more heroes and monsters. We only get a handful compared to the first edition, where there was usually 6 heroes per expansion and around 5 new monsters.

I don't know if disappointed is the right word, but I definitely do hope they release some new "non-standard" heroes in D2E. I agree that the inclusion of those "weird races" in earliers games gave Terrinoth a unique flavour.

Alas, I doubt they'll do it.

the 2nd edition takes no risks. Humans as heroes, monsters as badass, like films (lord of the ring) and other classical universes.

But, I think FFG listen to his public, so if we do a topic about it, maybe it will change it.

I don't know. I think they might make some crazy races. Orcs is a start, maybe? Testing the waters there, I am guessing. They also have one or two devious heroes. Along with Ores (which are known for being war loving and less heroic), there have been some shady humans. I really feel they are fitting the bill with "misfit" heroes, with a few exceptions. Because there ALWAYS has to be a "holier then thou" elf or goody-two-shoes human out to make star candy and rainbows of the world. Now that they have both of those out of the way, they can work on something a little different.

A healer dwarf is awesome. I don't think he's going to be a widely used character, BUT, the idea alone is entertaining. Maybe he's there for people that want a themed campaign?

I think that Widow Tahra is an Orc witch.

Pathfinder Durik (from Labyrinth) is an orc, also.
