The Assassin and the Chirurgeon

By bigcrowe, in Dark Heresy Second Edition Beta

Just looking through the roles...

The assassin has strength, agility and perception as his cheap to raise characteristics (x50 exp mod). Strength doesn't feel too right to me here. I appreciate that it helps him do more damage in combat, but I generally consider assassins to be extremely skilled rather than strong - should WS be used instead?

The Chirurgeon on the other hand does have WS as one of his easy characteristics (which is odd) and unfortunately has agility as one of the hard to raise ones (x150 exp mod). This is is not so good because applying first aid is based on agility/ Not sure why a doctor would be good in melee but poor at patching people up.

What do people reckon?

Strength may have been selected because it ties into Athletics and Acrobatics. I think it's less meant to represent brute strength in this case, and more physical fitness needed to be an efficient assassin.

I will grant the Chirugeon doesn't make much sense.

Chain scalpel sword surgery is a staple of the Wh40k univere. IG, Squat and Marine medics have always had chainswords, and are supposed to be good at chopping people up. But I agree, AG should be 100 and S or WP made 150.

First aid should remain int and not agi. But I guess that is just me. :-)

Still weirded out by Assassin not having support for being the stealthy sniper archetype.

Howdy,

Tying Medicine/First Aid to Agility is goofy.

Cheers,

Ken

Howdy,

Your reference to the 40K fluff is superb! :)

You mean all that time spent reading the old Rogue Trader, the RoC's and all that old stuff finally paid off! Shut up Starchild, nobody cares about you now. You too Senseis. Jokaeros, though, you guys can come back out, we never stopped loving you! Fimir and Zoats, we're still waiting to hear from you but you where great back in the days...

But back on topic, I think Plushy raises a good point; although the Desperado does pretty well in the role of stealth assassin. With a side of dashing rogue and stealing anything that's not nailed down, but hey, guns and bullets ain't exactly cheap in this economy.

As for tying Ag to first aid, there is a discussion on another thread on the subject, but it comes down to if you give more importance to the quick thinking or to the good hand-eye coordination and good reflexes for first aid. But then again, who needs good hand-eye coordination when you can just amputate with the nice chainsaw that's standard issue, and cauterize whats left with your also standard issue laspistol (hand-flamer and inferno pistol may also work, but they tend to do more damage than good, and think of the price of the ammunition...). It's like they knew how medicine works when they assigned the gear!
