Character creation with my new group!

By mfluder, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I finally found a group of people with a great interest in this game and got everyone together last night for character creation. All and all it took about 3.5 hours from start to finish, though some of that time was spent explaining the rules and new dice system.

I basically went around the table for each step passing my book around to allow players to view their options, fill in their sheets and move on to the next step. everyone had a blast and the narrative is already forming a rather interesting story without rolling a single die.

My question is this. Would it be easier or even a little quicker to just start and finish each character one at a time as oppose to going step by step as a group? A couple of times I felt like a one on one for each character would have allowed me to convey the rules regarding creation a little better but I wanted everyone to interact during the process so as to influence the individual characters to be created with a team/group function in mind. Going one by one I was afraid I might end up with four players with similar loadouts..

anyways I'm just curious how any of you have been doing it.

The way I'm doing it is meeting with each player seperately (on different days) to make each character. it's hard enough getting everyone to meet on one day a week to play, let alone to get everyone together to make characters.

Had one guy over on Tuesday to make his character, have another coming over tomorrow to make one. The 3rd guy, I'm still trying to figure out, and hopefully we're gonna play on Tuesday. That's kinda how we did D&D too. We'd all use the online character builder, make our characters, then show up on game day to play.

However. I think there's a lot of merit in getting a group together to do it. Like you said, you can diversify a little bit rather than having 4 smugglers, or 4 bounty hunters (I honestly don't expect technician and colonist to be used with our group).

Yeah I think Rookhelm raises a good point about scheduling, but if you can do it, I like your method.

It never occurred to me to go through 1 step at a time as a group. I think that's a pretty cool idea, for the reasons you mentioned, and also because it keeps everyone involved and basically gets rid of down time. I may do this myself in the future, if possible.

I actually did it the same way with my group this last weekend and it took about 3.5 hours as well. And then

Afterwards i also second guessed that method thinking it may have been better to do it one by one. In the end it was probably good to do it as a group as one player went politico just because 2 were combat heavy and the fourth actually changed his species to human halfway through since no one else was a human. His thinking was that it might be good to have one human should they need to wheel and deal with imperials.
