Hi all. I am thinking of getting the core rulebook and the dice set but it seems to me the dice set will not be enough dice. There is only 1 red "Challenge" die for instance. Has anyone found this to be a problem?
Enough dice in a single dice set?
I went for three sets just to be safe. I think you'll end up rerolling dice quite often with only one set.
An option I considered was to buy one set and the app, and use the app any time you needed more dice.
I bought the beginner set (partially for the dice) but I've quickly realized that there are times when you need at least two sets to form the proper dice pool. You would sometimes run into needing three for some rare times. I'm going to be placing an order for the GM Kit next month and I'm strongly considering at least one additional set of dice (if not two).
Even the devs think that two or three sets would be about right. (Order 66 Podcast 14 part 1)
Even the beginner box characters had a few points where we had to re-roll a die or two...
We (5 people) played the beginner set with 2 sets of dice, and it worked out fine.
Where you run into issues is if people want to set aside dice as "theirs" rather than sharing the pool.
OK. What about the proportion of each type of die in the set - is it about right or do you think FFG should have included more of one type and less of another?
I am already balking at the idea of buying 3 sets - that is a big expense. I may consider 2 - or even make my own with some blank dice.
[EDIT]
What I am really trying to say (and failing miserably) is how many of each type would be ideal? Could you just use one set and add some dice which are likely to run out - like the red one?
Edited by SmokeGunnerWe ordered two extra sets beyond the the basic box, plus two extra sets for a few of our players.
The ideal way to play this game is to have 2 dice sets sitting in the middle of the table that the Players and GM both use. The GM assigns difficulty dice and the player picks up their skill dice on their own, and they result land in the middle of the table for everyone to see. 2 Dice packs will have enough dice to cover your needs in most any situation.
When you start addition additional dice packs it tends to slow down action at the table.
Edited by strongarm855 sets here. The most ridiculous opposed check that can happen is 6/5, yea? Otherwise I have more than enough dice for my group to share and prebuild pools. I have yet to see in WFRP or Edge where a surplus of dice slows anything down. Not to mention we'll need more Force dice eventually. After being initially short on Warhammer dice due to OOP I wasn't about to skimp this time. If I lose some I have replacements, and nothing says I have to bust them all out. 10 bucks a pack from CoolStuff so in my case it's not a crushing financial investment.
Technically 2-3 sets are more than enough for all practical purposes. Get what you want and don't fall for "right/wrong" bs. It's your game and money. Cheers.

I am in the UK and the the dice are £11.99 on Amazon with free shipping (although currently sold out) and that works out at $18.29 a set. I could not find this Coolstuff site (but I imagine it is for US customers only). Would you be prepared to spend $91.45 just for dice! As usual, UK gamers seem to be penalised heavily for playing US games.
I think you could easily get by with 2 sets. You could get by with 1 of course, but it would be a lot of rerolling and keeping track. I ended up with 3...one from the beginner set, and 2 more. If you don't have the beginner set it has a nice intro adventure and maps, plus a dice set, so it's a pretty good deal.
I had already purchased the starter set when I started picking up more. Due to misreading the rules, I bought an extra three sets, so there are four at the table now, which seems enough for pretty much anything (short of upgrading five Difficulty Dice to Challenge Dice, since only one comes with each set).

Don't worry, I feel the same way anytime I try to get my XTC vinyl or Black Library collector imports over here
Brutal.
You can also just reroll an extra die or two. It's not like a board game where you are physically limited by number of dice you have to play with.

Yeah, exactly. I think $75 for dice just so that you don't need to reroll the Challenge Dice on the off-chance you suddenly have five of them in a pool is overkill.
I second the notion that picking up the Beginner Game box set (barely more expensive than the dice alone on Amazon) plus a single dice pack gives you enough to work with, plus you get some neat maps and tokens, to boot.
$75 for dice is crazy....
5 sets at Amazon is only $65.
And at other online retailers you could get 5 sets for $50.
But the likelyhood of needing 5 sets is low. I think 3 sets would handle most adventures, and 4 would even handle high level characters. Although there is the possibility of needing 6 sets! Argh! Thats $60-90 just for dice!
And there are options. A pretty cheap official app. Other unofficial free apps. The ability to use the chart, or make your own dice also is there.
I've probably spent well over that for various sets of other dice though (although they can be used for other games too) so it doesn't bother me too much as I enjoy the game so much.
Sadly, the entire dice issue could have been resolved by sticking 2 reds in each pack instead of 1.
Then 1 set would work for the majority of situations, 2 sets would pretty much always be enough, and the hardcore people could pick up 3 just because. It would be much harder for people to complain if that were the case.

Unfortunately us Brits get screwed over for the Beginner game too.
$22.55
£43.58 - which at current exchange is $66.49!!
Rip-off Britain strikes again. These sorts of discrepancies are really totally unjustified even if you take into account customs duties
Edited by SmokeGunnerI have two sets of dice and my players each have their own. Really we just throw dice at each other when someone needs it lol
Star Wars Dice App . Once people start throwing around costs that rival or exceed the core rulebook, it's time to consider the sterile deliciously efficient Dice App.
Or have a friend keister a couple sets of the actual dice into your country after they visit the US :-)
Edited by CallidonI could probably order from amazon.com and pay the extra postage for international shipping but even then I might get stung for customs and excise duty. I have seen another UK site selling it for a rather more reasonable £22.49 so I might consider that one.

I pretty much went this route. The other option is to use regular dice and photocopy the conversion table on p. 12, but that will add a bit to the crunch.

That's just Amazon. I bought the Beginner Game in a Forbidden Planet a couple of weeks ago for £16.
I found I, as a GM, needed 2 sets; I wanted 3. I've got the BG and a second set; I'll be adding another set or two if I get a campaign running.
Also, I find it odd that the dice set doesn't come with all the dice types you need. Where are the percentiles?
I'm a gamer with tons off dice, but I know of folks who bought a dice set, got home and realized they still needed more dice.
