[First Impressions]: Positives

By Plushy, in Dark Heresy Second Edition Beta

Okay some positives, in light of the update:

Perception bonus to Pen for Sniper weapons? A great idea!

Armour rules being fixed? Great!

While I understand your point (My favorite setting is still RT by far!) remember that DH characters are essentially at the beginning of their careers whereas RT characters are generally further along. I don't like that the characteristic rolls bumped up to RT lvls though (It's funny that this feels like petty griping compared to everything else that's wrong!)

Still, both Trials and Travails and Lure of the Void where things that where supposed to explain why your character came about being a high officer on a city sized spacecraft. The same thing can be said here; the Inquisition supposedly specially singles out individuals for service, it doesn't just pick at random, and currently, there is nothing that makes the individuals different or background option explaining their recruitment, something I feel would add a lot.

I like this. Roll D% on the 'Hooks of the Inquisition' table to see how the Big =][= got it's clutches into you.

What a great campaign tool, especially for more morally focussed or noir style investigation games.

First glance impressions:

  • Sublety is brilliant, just brilliant. This is what the game needed. It's brilliant because it has the potential to make the game different from your standard special ops RPG. I would tie influence into that too but subtlety is even more... unusual.
  • I like the grouping of skills for the most part. Some choices are (highly) debatable but overall quite good.
  • Psy seems okay at first glance, I particularly like the concept of psychic phenomena by category.
  • Novice/Elite/Master categories are good (including insta-kill), although some rules need some fine-tuning.
  • APs are okay, they are not too different from the move/swift/standard action in a certain other game system. Just named differently.
  • I basically like the idea of different personalities and the social interaction game. But 2 more personalities (whatever kind) might be nice. And maybe a tiny bit more mechanics about social interaction and intrigue. Not too much or it becomes too much but it could be slightly more elaborate/pronounced that this is sort-of a mini-game by itself.

Really... not THAT much has changed. And on some issues the devil is in the detail. Overall my reactions is positive , I feel some guys here are too conservative in their look at the beta... but it definitely needs some fine-tuning, agreed. And in some areas even a bit more than that.
