Using the beginner game pre-mades for the full game

By daddystabz, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Any people have good suggestions on how to use the pre-mades from the beginner game in the full game in case I have some players that want to do that?

I know they don't have Obligation listed on their sheets and things like that. How would you figure out their Obligation levels? Any other things I'd need to account for?

You could probably use the character backgrounds to suss out their Obligations.

However, I really don't recommend using the pre-gen PCs from the Beginner Box alongside characters built using the actual rules, mostly as the BegBox pre-gens are several shades of wacky, with everyone having more starting gear than normally allowed and the Humans having an extra 10 XP to allow them to have four Characteristics at a 3 as well as have more gear than the default 500 credits that the core rules provides for newly built PCs.

If anything, you might consider using the BegBox pre-gens as guidelines for building characters using the actual character creation rules.

I would probably look at it more as an adaptation. Take a look at the info in for pregenerated characters and see how closely you can reproduce them using the Core Rulebook rules. They won't match up exactly, but that's probably okay.

In other words create new characters, using the pre-generated characters as a guide.

Given that the pre-gens were created for specific adventures, and to teach the rules of play, they may not be the best characters to simply turn over to players in the Core game. As others have mentioned they don't exactly follow the character creation rules for beginning characters.

If your players are attracted to their back stories, simply use the pre-gens as guides or templates for creating characters with the regular rules and then use the existing story.

If it is the skills, talents, equipment etc that is appealing, explain that because they are not standard beginning characters you have to say no.

Unless of course everybody wants to play one. There are six after all. If everybody is playing one then they are starting from a level playing field again.

Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while but this made me sign up.

My group have been playing the beginner game too and they've almost finished The Long Arm of the Hutt which will put them 4 sessions in.

Several of them want to carry on with the pre-gen's as they've grown attached to the characters and have fleshed them out considerably.

To do this I think I'm going to keep their starting stats the same with justification that they took on extra obligation at creation (partly to Teemo the Hutt and the rest fitting it to their back stories: Favour for Pash, Oath for Lowhhrick etc).

As the talent tree's don't sync up nicely at all, I *think* I'm going to refund all XP gained during the beginner campaign, and allow them to pick a starting tree like so:

Oskara - any Bounty Hunter Spec

41-VEX - Doctor

Lowhrrick - Bodyguard (maybe allow other hired guns, will probably discuss this with the player)

Pash - Pilot or Scoundrel

Mathus - Any Technician

They can then re-spend their XP as normal.

I'm also thinking of enforcing some additional Obligation on them that they picked up during the beginner game.

Thoughts?

Tomocjt, that sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Since they all want to keep the characters they are on a level playing field, and since you are refunding XP they will be able to easily adapt to the Core Rules and continue to develop their characters.

I think this a great method.

It might even be fun to create an in-game reason for why this is happening, such as temporary amnesia, or a terrible starship crash that they have to recover from physically and mentally, rebuilding what they used to be able to do from scratch. You could have time elapse, and "get the team back together," new and improved, and ready to meet whatever comes their way. Just an idea.

Tomocjt, I did something similar for my beginners game guys, allowing them to rebuild their characters with the XP they gained during the campaign. I did lock them into beginning specialty trees though as follows:

  • Oskara - Bounty Hunter (Gadgeteer) - She's called a gear head all over the place so it makes sense
  • 41-VEX - Colonist (Doctor) - His entire purpose was to heal people
  • Lowhrrick - Hired Gun (Marauder) - Fought as a gladiator with a pretty scary vibro-axe
  • Pash - Smuggler (Pilot) - His entire back story focuses around flying various ships and having bad luck
  • Mathus - Technician (Outlaw Tech) - His modified gauntlets and minor alterations to 41-VEX seem to point at that being his thing.

We currently have three characters using the Beta rules (and subsequently the Core Rules) and five from the Beginner game. we decided on talent trees for them from the Core Rules and have been working with that since its release. the Obligations stuff we rolled for along with motivations about three sessions in, and that's worked well. the wo 'streams' work fine alongside each other too.
