Agreed. Although, that is the only dumb change I saw. I like the rest.
The new questions in the FAQ.... really? no one asked more relevant questions? "Can a shield prevent damage being dealt by my opponent [in x situation]?" "Does 'remove one token' remove a '3' token?" Honestly? these were the questions you decided to answer in an official document?

That's not my problem with it. There are more relevant questions to answer than "let's just pick the new questions with the most obvious answers and add them to the FAQ

Has this ever been a problem?!? Nationals and Worlds, sure, but Regionals?!? This makes no sense.
I've been a judge in multiple Thrones Regionals, always with a second TO present, and participated in a lot of others doing the same and it's never once been an issue. We've seen TOs make mistakes, of course, but that's going to happen whether they're playing or not.
As long as they're not making rulings on their own games, they should be allowed to play. Incredibly bad alteration of the deal; I pray they don't alter A:NR or Thrones further, too.
What I don't understand is making The Battle of Hoth Force pack Illegal. WTF? I hope this isn't going to be a common trend. My guess is that the release date for the pack is too close to the event date and so not everyone (like us up in Canada) would have had it delivered yet.
Concerned anyone?

That sounds most likely. However, I can think of a few ways off the top of my head to alleviate this:
- Bring some to GenCon (duh)
- Give players registered in the event a free copy
- a) If they're worried about pre-orders, then make these print on demand whitebacks, so players will still need to get their pre-order copy
- Spoil the set the Monday before so players can proxy for testing
I don't think FFG has a responsibility to to do any of that, just would've been a nice 'solid' to the players in the NA championship event. Oh well, not legal for the event works too. :/

Conversely, they could adjust their standard "Its legal when its out" policy to something that actually makes sense like "Legal two weeks following the announced release date". like any sensible card game. Of course, that would mean they would have to officially announce their release dates..
TO's participating isn't as big of a deal as making sure that there are judges around who know what they are talking about. Too often judges at big events seem to know less about the rules than many of the players. Also, in my experience, judges are far too lenient when it comes to letting people take things back, etc. Tournament play should be extremely strict.
If everyone in the place is playing, and someone has to get up from a game to go and make rulings about another game, this is extremely problematic. There needs to be judges floating around, ready to make sound calls on an immediate ad hoc basis. As a customer and a player, my play experience should not suffer just because the person running the shop also wants to play.

this is why you have extra judges at an event.
I have judged events for Mechwarrior and WoW TCG extensively. And I played in most of those events too. It did not affect the tournament or peoples experience. This ruling is complete crap from FFG and really will hurt their volunteer base. It is a bad move and one I expect them to reverse soon. This is not WoW TCG or Magic where the judges for those get decent compensation even at the lower levels.
I really wonder how they expect to find competent people willing to judge in/organize a Regional. If a person has a really good grasp of the rules it has to do with his dedication to the game. Why should this person be willing to judge in a tournament when now he may not participate? He has to do more work than the other participants and then is getting punished for it.
Why should one bother to organize a tournament which is often done by players which then look for a store to make the tournament official?
Even if FFG compensates those people judging in a tournament I would always rather play in a tournament than judge. Now if you pass the job to a guy who doesn't care too much about playing in a Regional how likely is it that this guy is really able to do the job?

Tournament Organizers and Judges for premier championship tournaments (Regionals, Nationals, and Worlds) are expected to commit their full attention to organizing and judging the event, and therefore are not permitted to participate in their own Regional, National, or World Championship events as players.

In one of the regionals I participated in, a TO did cause problems. He played in his own event, created a bye, and even gave himself a bye in Round 2. I'm all for FFG hurting people from doing this, sadly it means hurting their volunteers as well. I really like the proposed idea of rewarding the volunteers with free stuff, though I'm sure some ahole will take advantage of that too. One bad apple ruins the bunch...

This news is great news. As was said elsewhere, there are 120 people playing in this event. If the set drops the week before or the week of, odds are not all 120 people will be able to get their hands on the product. Product, imo, shouldn't be legal for 1-2 weeks after it drops anyway. A lot of card games already do that.
Edge of Darkness was a total cluster for our area. One store, 3hrs away, got six of their twelve ordered last week. All stores within 60miles of me won't get their EoD until tomorrow. If that happened to people attending Gencon, it would be disastrous. By making it illegal for the event, it guarantees that masses of players don't have to go out of their way to find it. Plus, it's 5 objective sets - who cares if it is legal when we just got 22 new ones?

I guess, if they dont want me to play in events were i am the TO i can just take the best stuff out of the kit as my compensation for running it................. That works out better for me ... shoot i would have a nice coin right now!
really though thats pretty stupid most regional events had 8-12 people thats more then enough for 1.5 people to cover, rules arguements hardly ever even seem to come up in events i run because we go through FAQ and new card rulings before the tourney starts.
For those of you who dont run events...
alot of people have familys, work and life. Most dont get paid to and to cut them out of the event well.. the event simply wont happen in alot of places. But at my LGS Ill just say that the clerk is the TO, ill be his assistant and then ill have an assistant

ok, good point
Still don't really understand why # of objectives destroyed as the dark side is used in resolving a dark-side tiebreaker, while only the Death Star dial matters for a light-side tiebreaker, but w/e. Still good to see updated rules in enough of an advance of Gen Con for players to plan accordingly.
I think it's because those are the only two definitive measures of success beyond each side's victory condition. I've always been annoyed that the tiebreakers favour aggro decks, but this game is largely combat-based so I'm starting to not see it as such a bad thing. Non-combat strategies like denial or mill, which are common in some other games, are unlikely to ever be a big part of this game considering how objective sets function, the ticking Death Star Dial, and the whole element of damaging and destroying objectives. Maybe some day, but for now it seems like the intricacies of striking and directly interacting with your opponents' units and objectives are going to be the central focus of the game. I find that a little disappointing in a lot of ways, but I think Fantasy Flight have only continued to positively defy my expectations with this game, so I think they know what they're doing.

No, I've already gotten answers from Nate for the really important ones. I just hate having to pull up a thread or email to prove it to people when they have te new FAQ and it's not in there.

Cause if you're winning as the light side, you've destroyed 3... unless you pulled a Home One scenario or something similar. it makes more sense if you both won by destroying three of your opponent's objectives, the tie breaker would be who did it the fastest.
You'd be surprised by how many people are switching gears to more aggressive DS decks. It's entirely possible to destroy 4 objectives as DS. I've done it, and quite a few people in my meta have too. If this wasn't the tie breaker, what's the reward for destroying your opponent so thoroughly, aside from winning 1/2 of the match? absolutely nothing...
I think it should be the amount of damage counters inflicted by the DS player on LS objectives, as opposed to whole objectives.

Along these lines, if people want to come up with a list of which rulings they'd like to see in the next version of the FAQ, how about using this thread to list them and I'll make sure they're pitched.
