Character creation, points?

By Boaventura, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Greetings, fellow players.

I have a rather simple question. My players have on their hands both Dark Heresy and Rogue trader, though no one of us is experienced at either GMing or playing this game. They've read both books, and opted to play Dark Heresy first to "get a feel" of the scenario, and learn what's the life at the bottom of the ladder before playing with top characters from Rogue Trader. Though....

1- They asked me if they could use the optional point rule from Rogue Trader in Dark heresy, which is to assemble 100 points between their characteristics, none surpassing 40 initially. While I don't mind point distribution rules (They hate relying on luck to get their stats) I do have to ask if the system would be compatible with Dark Heresy, and if yes, if the whole 100 points should be distributed or, due Dark Heresy sporting weaker characters than Rogue Trader, give them less points to distribute.

2- One of my players asked if it would be possible to use the Psyker System from Rogue Trader instead of the Dark Heresy. Mind you, he doesn't want to use an Astropath, he wants to use a 'normal' psyker from Dark Heresy, but using the Psychic Power rules from Rogue Trader (Will instead of Power Rolls). I initially said to him that I'd prefer to gather experience GMing in such a new system before altering the rules, which he thankfully obliged, though this request roused my interest.

Thank you for your time and help!

I personally do not like point buy for characteristics as it allows min-maxing, and in my mind will result in more similar characters.

You can allow various mechanics to make the rolls less random for stats, such as having the players roll the 2d10 a number of times equal to the number of stats, and then let them assign them to which stats they want (rather than assigning them in order), having "tearing" dice rolls for characteristics (Roll 3d10 and drop the lowest) (the group I joined used that for Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy) and have the players all roll their stats and then swap the "arrays" that have been generated between them (we used that for Deathwatch).

You can also have them roll their stats and then let them re-roll if they are massively unfitting to their concept or just rubbish overall.

I prefer points allocation to random rolling.

In the end, most groups will allow for some min-maxing, why not just let the players decide how to spend their points? It creates an equal starting point for all characters, so the guy that normally has killer luck with his dice, and the guy that always rolls below 10 on average can both make their characters the way they want.

Rogue Trader gets stronger characters because they add the same roll to a baseline of 25 points per characteristic, rather than DH's 20 points (this is before accounting for home world modifiers). 100 points will totally be alright.

Don't be afraid, do so right away if you have the possibility! Don't even look at DH psychic rules, pick up RT and save yourself a ton of troubles.
