Play Aids - second thoughts

By gribble, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Right, so I'll cut right to the chase. My time at the moment is at a premium, and looking around I just don't see that much of a need for my play aids any more.

The original idea was that during the Beta it'd be nice to have a summary of the rules / talent trees with the most up to date versions of everything. However, now that the final version of the rules have been released, it seems to me that the whole idea has been made obselete by the official support in the form of the GM screen and the PDF versions of the talent trees people have already made/released. A secondary concern is that I don't what to do anything to p-off FFG by creating competing products to their GM screen and the talent trees in the book.

So, rather than spend a lot of time on updating everything, I thought I'd check in with everyone first:

1) Would you be interested in updated versions of my play aids?

2) If so, what specifically would you like to see? What (based on my previous play aids) do you actually use/need at the table (assuming you already have the GM screen and one of the many PDF versions of the talent trees)?

printable or tablet conversions of talent trees are going to be a high demand item, but there are several people working on those currently. you did so much great work during the beta, if time is a premium maybe it's your turn to kick back and let some of the padawans do the grunt work now :) cheers.

I wouldn't mind seeing an update of the talent trees, as I think your format of having each career's three specs on the same page and then a summary of the talents on the bottom half of the page works a lot better than the "one page per spec" format that everyone else is using.

That said, I can understand the whole "free time is at a premium" and wouldn't fault you one bit if you opted to kick back and let other folks concoct their own reference docs.

First, I want to say "THANK YOU" for those references sheets, when the BETA was the only thing we had, it helped me a lot understanding the game.

As far as what is usefull, I have to say, that I like in your Reference sheets, the Advantage/Disadventage section, for the skills, it helps thinking about the possible outcome, I also like the Environmental effects, it's not on the GM Screen (as far as I know), The Combat modifier I also find useful.

I also like to have a single list of the "catalog" of items, maybe with the page numbers. Whenever my PC wants something (item-related, say Electro-binocular), I have to parse through the few tables in the equipment section to find it out. That would be helpful.

The Talent tree, I agree, a few have been posted, and are usefull for the Players, mostly, Yours was great, but from a player's point of view, you'd probably prefer to only have your PC-specific talent trees. It's probably not worth the effort, unless you are going to use them yourself.

I liked the Combat reference sheet, I would use an updated version (tough I haven't looked to see what changed).

The Critical Cards, I haven't used at all. But with my last few games, we've seen a lot of Critical hits (the PCs are non-combat styles - Outlaw and Politico), so they've seen a fair share of Crits. I'm thinking of using them, it sounds a good option.

I did not participate in the beta (not buying a preview) so I'm looking at your work with fresh eyes. As our campaign is scheduled to kick off next month, I was planning on printing all your material. While some other stuff looks prettier - I find the function of your aids superb and saves ME from having to do it for my players! :)

I, too, prefer the format of your talent trees. Consice, succinct, less ink and paper with all relevant info. I like the idea of the cards if only to keep track of player crits (or to draw randomly if we don't want to use the charts - I'll leave that mechanic up to my players.) And the reference sheets will fall into obscurity at some point I'm sure as our experience with the game system increases, but they're an absolute great reference for now.

Actually, for the Crits, don't draw it out, some weapons have "Vicious", which increase the danger of the critical (+10%/Vicious rank of the weapon), as well as existing criticals (10% on the table). So you'll need to use the table, but you can hand out the actual card to the player, so that they know what the effect they have and not forget it! ;)

I'm thinking of using them as well, but with the crit table.

Yep - to clarify, this is the intent. For the reasons given by aljovin, you can't easily use them as a "deck" to draw from, but you can give them to players to track current criticals. The idea was stolen from Paizo's Pathfinder condition cards.

So, it sounds like there is still some interest. I also prefer the 1 career per page style of talent tree, so I'll concentrate on getting those updated first, followed by:

  • Character creation summary
  • Combat summary (I'll try to squeeze Environmental effects in there, if it isn't on the GM screen)
  • Skills summary
  • Equipment summary
  • Critical cards

In that rough order (based on feedback and what I'd personally find useful). Rather than one big set of sheets, I'll likely break them out separately as per above and release each as they're completed. I don't think any of the above replicates anything from the GM screen (I'll check first and maybe revisit if it does).

I'll aim to get the first 2-3 done over the next week or so, the remainder will follow as time permits.

I really liked your talent trees, very nice for players and GM's alike to be able to see all their options in front of them. Also, a "living" document for character creation that updates as new official races are added would be great. I understand your time being valuable, so what ever you feel is worth doing is great. I would just like to re-emphasize how much your concise character building steps was awesome. Thank you for your work.

E

they still have their place for those who yet to get a book but it has been my hope that everyone who wants to play this game go buy one. have said that got to sheets help me where most my work is done from my laptop and my games are over roll 20.

All the stuff you listed above would be wonderful. I think the rest is covered.

I know myself and my group truly appreciate your work.

I absolutely would love to have updated reference sheets, Gribble. I'm using your most recent ones now and they are largely accurate to release, so I don't think you'd have a ton of work really.

Anyway, yeah, +1 for me.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say thank you for creating the sheets - I actually printed off the advantage combat sheets and gave them to my players when we first started so they would have something to reference. They now are having lots of fun coming up with their own advantage/triumphs, which is great for a group made up almost entirely of new RPG players!

The order you've decided to update things is fine by me - if it helps, once the core rulebook came out I immediately came here looking to see if you had updated the sheets, so it's definitely in demand!

girbble, you deserve a medal placed around your neck by Princess Leia for all the work you have done. Your play aids are still in use in my home game. Any work you do to update your stuff would be appreciated by at least my crew and probably a lot more. I'd throw "Republic Credits" your way for your work if I could.

I guess I will have to take a look your stuff. It seems to be very popular.

Alright, I am bringing out this post from the past.

What I really like about Gribble's sheets is that all pages are referenced, thus as a GM I can also go to the appropriate page to read more about those rules.

I may start to GM EotE again, online through Roll20, and such sheets are better than FFG GM screen, because it's on PDF and can be loaded on my desktop screen right next to Roll20. It allows me to let my core rulebook on the shelf, and not mess with it during an online session. I own the GM screen as well, and it's a good product for tabletop, but not well suited to online use.

So, I am curious whether there is an update version of those reference sheets with the right pages referenced, or whether anyone has created anything similar?

Thank you

Wow, so those sheets have not been updated nor anyone has created something similar that allows to leave the core book aside during a game? I am amazed. Ok, well maybe I need to create it then. I have tried finding Gribble but he hasn't posted since a long time and may not be around anymore.
