A strong Gondor deck

By Olorin93, in Strategy and deck-building

My friend wants to build a Gondor deck. He has the Core set, Khazad-Dum, HoN, The Steward's Fear and The DrĂșadan Forest.

He just threw a deck together last night and tried it out, but we failed miserably at Peril in Pelargir and Into Ithilien. (He was Tactics/Leadership, I play Spirit/Lore.) We reworked it a bit and then we tried the first Core set scenario (Mirkwood) just for a confidence boost, and we breezed through that.

He definitely wants to go for the Gondor theme. He already has Beregond and Boromir (HoN) for attack and defense, and will probably want a 3rd Gondor character. I offered to bring Imrahil the next time we play, but that would leave him with just 1 Tactics hero and most of his allies are Tactics and need resources to be played.

Any ideas about building with Beregond and Boromir? He's trying to avoid using Rohan characters, but maybe that's inevitable.

what about hirluin and the outlands? that seems the most obvious way to go with his card pool. i would say that you would want to take out boromir (his +1 boost will not be that great in an outlands deck anyways) and put in a gondor character for lore or spirit....so denethor or eleanor. i would go for denethor, especially in solo play.

if he doenst want outlands, then its more tricky as you have the resource problem for allies. you are still pretty much stuck with either denethor or eleanor for gondor heroes.

I see! We did look at Hirluin and the possibility of using the Outlands cards. But either way, you mean that a 3-sphere deck would be the route to go (Beregond, Hirluin, Denethor/Eleanor)? He does want to be able to quest for himself, and a Leadership/Tactics deck doesn't quite cut it.

indeed. it is quite a tough thing to pull off with the card pool you have. with outlands questing is not a problem. the spirit outlands ally, if you have all 3 in play, means each of the has 4 willpower, so thats 12 willpower and hirluin has 4 so thats 16 willpower.

if you have eleanor then that means her and hirluin can pay for them immediatly, though if you want to try it differently without the spirit hero, then you can put steward of gondor on hirluin and you can have the outlands out very quickly indeed.

i think that is the most powerful way to go - you can either have:

boromir/beregond/hirluin starting at 29

denethor/hirluin/beregond starting at 26

eleanor/hirluin/beregond starting at 25

denethor/eleanor/hirluin starting at 23

Thanks for this! We are very new to HON and struggling with both quests and deck building. The fact that many locations now have 4 threat instead of 1-3 definitely makes progress harder to achieve.

though if you want to try it differently without the spirit hero, then you can put steward of gondor on hirluin and you can have the outlands out very quickly indeed.

It would also mean he would gain the Gondor trait and then all the heros can be Gondor heros.

Saying that I have a friend who uses an Outlands deck and uses Aragorn (Leadership), Hirluin and Berevor. If you can get Steward of Gondor on Aragorn along with Celebrian's Stone (gains spirit resource) he can quest with 4 and then ready. If you are also lucky enough to get the Sword that was broken on him as well and then the Ring which gives him a Lore resource icon as well as extra hit points for each artifact he becomes a monster! Using Berevor for the card draw and Hirluin to get the Outlands allies out, this deck can often quest with 25+ once it gets a good head of steam..... perfect for complimenting my hit and defend tactics deck.

I just a make quite powerful Gondor deck.

I start from Leadirship mono Gondor. IS quite cool but is a limited as well.

So in the end of the day I come to Aragorn lore, Denethor, Boromir lore.

Very strong deck. Not as strong as Outlands or Thorin and Company but still quite cool one.

New Gondor lore Rangers attack 3 with Boromir they are quite cool. In whole deck is only 2 not Gondor allies : Cleowine and Gandalf. I try do without Cleowine but without good draw not easy to play.

Path of needed amazing in this deck!

Hi Glaurung,

I'm a big fan of the decks you make... you save me a lot of time and energy in deck building... I play several of your decks you have posted online...

Could you perhaps post the Gondor deck you mentioned above? I'm trying to make a good Gondor deck for my friends and I...

Thanks again... you along with several others help me tremendously (Rich Sabre, Tracker1, Hall of Beorn, Tales From the Cards and Master of Lore) in my gaming endeavors... I've probably forgot some people... Anyways, I really appreciate all your efforts in helping others play this great game : )

to be honest this deck is not so good. Now when i got some new cards from AOO i try to make a better version but it take sometime. Im a bit angry on FFG last quests since they are really boring so i dont have mood to play LOTR now.
