Minions and Critical Hits

By civviewarrior20, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

A player manages to roll a triumph (or the required number of advantage) to trigger a critical hit as well as a few net successes against a minion group...

Now I understand that criticals insta-gib minions, but about the damage from the hit?

Do you insta-gib minion 1 and apply the excess damage to the minion group or is the damage considered part of the "critical"?

Just my two cents but i'd kill the critted minion first, then apply damage to the remainder.

Venthrac is correct. Kill the critted minion, then apply remaining damage to the rest. You may actually have enough successes to kill another minion, or really injure one close to death.

Yea, "critting" a minion basically just means that the attack does additional damage equal to the maximum health of one of your minions.

On out first try of this system, a player with a blaster rifle rolled both a Triumph and enough Advantage to get a weapon crit, and also 3 Successes, adding 3 to the 11 normal damage from the rifle. As I interpreted it, that would mean two insta-killed stormtroopers from the crits and the 14 damage from the blast ripped the last trooper to shreds.

Although this could make a pretty cool moviescene, we all felt that if this was correct, it was very over powered. One shot to wipe out a squad of three stormtroopers - did we do this correctly?

Also take into account that it's just not one shot. It's multiple shots from your gun while you are spending the time you have to fire your weapon as much as you can. At least that's how I see it.

I thought you could only do 1 crit per roll, each extra crit after the first only adds to the firsts severity.

I think so too, but since this was against minions, there is the question of that rule not applying. :)

Would be cool to get the correct ruling on this, since it will affect the choices my group will do when they create new characters and how they act in a battle situation.

Ahh, of course! When this occurred, the gunner simply had a rush of adrenaline, went on instinct and did not even aim. Afterwards, she could not really explain how it had all happened, but she sure got a lot of free drinks out of the story. :)

That would certainly make Mixxathon's scenario seem a little less over powered. So, an alternative...use the Triumph to kill a minion, use the rest of the damage (the successes/rifle damage) to add more damage to the rest of the group, then use the 2 advantages for someting else. Restore strain maybe.

Whether is is official or not allowing one crit per opponent per turn would be fine with me. So I would definitely allow criting multiple minions with one roll.

I would probably allow multiple crits on minions because why the hell not? XD.

I also personally make Blast weapons deal their blast damage x the number of minions, since they are all probably engaged with eachother and a grenade would totally be really effective against that.

I would have only allowed the first crit to outright kill a minion, then apply damage, the use the adv for something else.

As for one ATTACK killing off 3 stormies... I seem to remember a very angry Luke bullseying a lot of stormies after he saw Obi-wan go down. 3 or more before he shot the pannel to close the blast doors. Seems appropriate for that good of a roll...

And I wouldn't count on those happening often.
