Opening Crawl

By Darth Relic, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm curious, what program would you use to create an opening crawl for an adventure?

Made one once using Windows Movie Maker.

Have a look at the player made section in the read this first topic... Link to crawl maker on the official SW website...

i like the windows movie maker one, the tutorial is a little complex but very straight forward and you only have to do it once then save your project. you can then just open the project and change the text for new adventures. the program is free and its a windows program so its pretty bug free.

Anyone have a link for a tutorial in Windows movie maker?

I'm literally using this every time I ever do a campaign/one shot using this system for Star Wars from now on. There's no reason not to. It is so simple and awesome.

I do enjoy the ease of use with the star wars website one but i needed an offline option for my game as we may not be near any wifi when we play. the star wars web one generates a flash crawl that you cant download not even using keepvid.com. the only reason I recommend the movie maker option is if you need an actual video format like mp4 or something, and also there is a line limit on the online generator, in the odd event your opening crawl needs to be longer than a couple paragraphs the movie maker option may be the way to go.

Personally, I use After Effects. However, I do understand that may be a bit on the high-end for this single purpose. I'm also green-screening a ship flying towards a planet after the camera scrolls down the starfield. However, my players chose the Wayfarer as their starting ship and I don't have a model or mini that even resembles that. Time to kitbash, I suppose.

The only thing I find a little annoying with the official one on the star wars website is that the music doesn't fade together properly, it kind of skips toward the end. I wouldn't mind (and it has not stopped me using it) but the length of the crawl is fixed and not dependant on the amount of text you enter. Apart from that it is a very useful site.

imovie is also very simple to use.

I will definitely be using some of these. Thanks for the links.

I've been doing one in Blender. Not easy at all, but I've wanted to learn some 3D modeling for a while, and most of the other options out there aren't as accurate as I'd like. A lot of the issues are relatively minor - the logo text is hollow, there's no fade out, text position is wrong, etc... but I'm a stickler for authenticity :)

Putting the finishing touches on mine this week, will post when done.

Not surprising. Most of those issues are why things like crawlers are done in something like After Effects rather than Blender/Lightwave/3D Studio Max. You can more easily do the crawl in a compositor and then composite in the renders you do of something in 3D (like a planet or ship flying by at the end).

It's not so much a matter of adding stuff (although my pan-to-planet rocks ;) ) It's more about needing very precise control to recreate the whole process correctly. For example, the Star Wars logo should be solid black text - most recreates just do it with transparent text. The fade effect is tricky to do properly as well on the crawl, as the top of the text should fade into the distance, and then the entire text fades at the end.

I struggled with iMovie's export quality. It turned my planet's horizon into horrible jaggies so used After Effects to make it. Thankfully there are many how to movies for AE on Youtube too.

Anyone know how to get that working as a video on obsidian portal?

As far as I know, there's no way to save/export the creator's video.

you can screen capture your screen, or part thereof, as a movie file with sound. there are quite a few utility apps out there... I use snapz pro (on a mac).

That's a bit better than the people that use their cellphones to capture something from their TV and then post on youtube... heheh.
