Converting Saga starships to EotE (guide)

By shidarin, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Intro:

Hey everybody, because I'm a big fan of starships and there's just not enough EoE formatted starships yet, I set about to see if there was any way to come up with some hard or loose rules for converting starships from Saga era (specifically the *Starships of the Galaxy* supplement). Comparing the two rulebooks I discovered that- for the most part- there are some rules one can use to do that. I also posted this on reddit.

Notes:

  • Encumbrance is messed up. Seriously messed up. It seems to be made up at random with no reference materials whatsoever. Starfighter level ships seem to be using the personal size encumbrance measurement, but freighter and above is totally out of wack in relation to common sense, Saga tonnage and is not internally consistent. I have some additional theories and thoughts on freigter encumbrance that I'll post in a new thread.
  • Certain things are the exact same from Saga to EoE, indicating either FF copied straight from Saga or straight from a Lucasfilm bible (possibly updated to include the Saga era). Things like Consumables (perfect match) and Hyperdrives (Almost perfect match).
  • Silhouette seems like a logarithmic scale- with Frigates being only 1 above a Corvette which is only 1 above a small freighter like the YT-2400.

Rules:

  1. Cost: Take the Saga era used cost and multiply by .6 to get an EoE cost. Older ships like the V-19 might be .5, newer (possibly only prototypes) would be closer to .7
  2. Restricted: Licensed becomes no restrictions in EoE, and older restricted craft (Old Republic era) are now no restrictions. Current era restricted craft are still restricted for the most part, but will see an uptick in rarity.
  3. Speed: Almost always the exact same number. Some Saga freighters that were especially slow might see an upgrade, and some larger saga era freighters that were a little too fast see a downgrade.
  4. Consumables: 1:1
  5. Cargo: On starfighters, take the average crew compliment and multiply by 7, then add anywhere from 2-4. On shuttles and freighters, take the Saga era tonnage and multiply by **** if I know. I've been using .6-.7 for my own translations, but sometimes FFG goes from Saga era 80 to EoE 200. If anyone can make any sense of it, please comment below.
  6. Hyperdrive: Pretty much a 1:1 copy of Saga
  7. Armor/Damage Reduction: Divide DR by 5 and add 1. Adjust if crazy (problem on size 5 and above)
  8. HP/Hull Threshold: Divide Saga HP by 11, minor adjustments.
  9. Shields: Divide Saga SR by 15, minor adjustments.
  10. System Strain: Divide Threshold by 5.5
  11. Size: Take the personal grid size (4x4 etc) and divide by 4, then multiply by 3. FFG has corrected some of the crazier Saga era sizings here- a medium transport is no longer the same size as the YT-1300.
  12. Hardpoints, Weapons, Passengers, Handling: Case by case basis.

The spreadsheet:

I've included a few of my own conversions in the spreadsheet, a V-19, an X-wing, a B-wing, a Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser and a Hapan Battle Dragon.

Nice work! Any added value I can get form my Saga books at this point is great.

It's actually very consistent- I wish I had a bigger trove of Saga ship content. If you look at the spreadsheet, minor tweaks have been made here and there- HP, Shields and Strain with minor adjustment on most ships but you can easily get a very servicable ballpark. But both Saga and EotE were obviously working off roughly the same source material and made the same logical choices given the universe.

The exception being encumbrance... I think I know why the Lamdba shuttle has 200 encumbrance, but I have some numbers to run still. Other ships, I have no idea.
