Understanding Monster Stats

By fjw70, in WFRP Rules Questions

I have been looking through the rules and I want to make sure I understand the monster stats for this game.

Let me use the orc from The Tome of Adventure as an example:

1) The orc makes melee attacks with the following dice pool: BBBRRW. I listed the white since there is a white die symbol next to the strength entry. The hate dwarves ability adds an extra white die.

2) The orc would have a base damage of 10 (5+5) with melee attacks.

3) The orc would have a dmage reduction of 7 (5+2).

4) The orc has a defense of 1 so 1 black die would be added to attacks against him.

5) The standard orc would have wounds of 14 and the henchman orc would have wounds of 5.

6) The A/C/E are pools of white dice that can be used once each for the particular areas. So the 6 A dice are six white dice that can be used for any combat checks the orc makes. When do these refresh?

7) The attack and damge listed above were for melee attack. For a ranged attack would the pool be BRR and the base damage be 8 (5 damage + 3 agility)?

So does the above sound correct?

Do monsters ever use yellow skill dice?

Yes, you got your numbers right. Here is a way to improve them:

Yellow dice: I recommend using your yellow dice (expertise) right off the bat, as the PCs will typically take out the toughest monsters right away.

Melee: Base damage is with a hand weapon (5). I would recommend them using a great weapon (7) so that they can reckless cleave action.

Soak & Defense. Base is listed. I would recommend putting the orc in armor to increase the soak.

Defense: Add Improved Dodge and Improved Block.

Hero's Call templates: If you add a hero's call template, you can increase all of their base stats by additional amounts

Are the A/C/E dice yellow dice? If not, where do the yellow dice come from?

Yellow dice come from 2 sources:

1. If the creature is "trained" in a skill. For example: Regular orcs are not trained in weapon skill. Black orcs ARE trained in Weapon Skill

2. A/C/E dice are as follows

  • A = White (aggression) dice_fortune.png - used for combat and physical actions, or initiative; any number per round
  • C = White (cunning) - used for social and non-physical actions, or initiative; any number per round
  • E = YELLOW (Expertise) dice_expertise.png -- NO more than one can be applied per action (i.e. once per round)
  • DEFENSE: dice_misfortune.png A/C dice can be used for defensive actions (adds a black to the attacker)

The GM can use a few each round per creature unless he's a bastard and uses a bunch all at once.

Henchmen SHARE their ACE dice.

ACE dice refresh with a Rally Step or with a change in encounter.
