Starting Starship & Obligation

By jason.richardson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello,

Just curious as to how other Edge of the Empire gamers handle this: do you assign the starship to a specific character and their personal obligation?

If not, how do you handle the star ship's obligation arising during campaign play?

Thanks in advance.

Why would the starship incur Obligation? Unless the party got a newer shinier one after creation?

As to the second question, any Party Obligation would apply to the entire party if it is rolled for a session.

Does that help at all?

The "Escape from Mos Shutta" adventure had the PCs acquire the party ship as part of the adventure (stealing it from a Trandoshan bounty hunter), and the book itself seems to strongly suggest that the ship be owned by the entire party rather than a single individual as was the norm in prior Star Wars RPGs.

Personally, I'm good with either approach. If the GM feels that having one PC be the sole owner of a ship is a better fit for the initial stages of the campaign than having it be owned by the entire group, there's nothing saying that can't be done. After all, looking to the original trilogy, Han Solo was the primary owner and operator of the Millennium Falcon, with Luke and Leia having zero claim to the ship throughout the trilogy. So there is a precedent for it.

As for the Obligation, I wouldn't monkey with it, but then again I don't recall seeing anything in the rules about the ship having it's own Obligation, but rather each party member's own Obligation accounted for starting the game off with a starship.

Thanks guys.

The book states (page 99), "As part of their Obligation, each group starts the game with a starship."

Was just curious to see how other groups handle it. If I give my players a starship that was earned via a Hutt credit loan, I want that to be an option for coming up when I roll for Obligation at the start of each session. So, given that, it makes sense that I should assign it to a specific character's Obligation. Maybe. Maybe there's no reason to be specific, but the book does tie it to the characters' Obligation.

How much Obligation is required for a starting player to start with their own ship? +10? +15? How much ship would that buy?

This sounds like a good idea. Thanks.

As players that acquired the ship from Escape From mos Shutta, we view it as "our" ship and nobody has tried to lay claim to it. Considering how it was obtained, I don't think anybody could actually try to claim it. We have all kept it up and running as well. We have all contributed to keeping it afloat.

Technically, every group starts with a starship, free of 'charge,' as it were.

It's up to the GM and players to determine how and why they have that starship; if it makes sense for it to be tied to one or more players' Obligations, then hey, it's that much better (such as Criminal for having stolen it, Debt for having purchased it, etc.).

The trader in my group just negotiated a contract with the other crew members, essentially making them employees of his. He took out the debt to buy the starship (they sold their other one...) and so he's responsible for it and the debt. Took a bit of convincing for the crew to sign it, but they (almost) all have.

Or, depending on how you look at things, that starship may be a result of the baseline Obligation that every character must have at the start of the game.

According to the rules, all groups start with one of three ships. They can choose, a YT-1300, a Fire Spray, or a third ship that I had never heard of and whose name I don't remember, but it was a larger freighter than a YT-1300.

If you use the rules for obligation, you would max out your allowable starting obligation long before you could afford a space ship (or on a slightly unrelated note: a lightsaber)

It is a Wayfarer, you can find more info about it on wookieepedia.

Were I to roll a smuggler perfectly legitimate courier, I'd start with this page and find a model that thematically matches my captain. Then I'd stat it out using the closest match in the book as my starting point. Then I'd pick a personal obligation that best describes how I acquired such a fine starship.

PS: Also, here is a good list of transports, including attack/patrol craft for the self-styled hunter...
