Range Ruler gets in the way

By ScaperCrawford, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, I have an interesting question. Now I am very VERY new to this game or any game like it. I love it very much so much so I bought 3 core sets, 1 tie fighter, 1 a-wing, 1 tie adv, 1 Falcon and 1 Slave one... so far...

My question is towards the ranger ruler. Is there an easy way to measure your range with out accidentally moving your ship or others? Sometimes it gets so close and tight with all these ships flying around. Should we just "eyeball" it from above the ships? Or is there a better way?

Thanks!

If you have three core sets, take a razor blade and cut one of the range rulers at the hash mark. Now you have two 1-3 rulers, one range 1 ruler, and one range 1-2 ruler. Also, turning the ruler edge perpendicular to the table lets you get past a swarm ball.

Thats good advice! I'll have to do that

You can also measure with a piece of string then compare the string to the measure stick. We also tip other miniatures out o0f the way being careful to maintain their side contact pints on the base to keep their position correct. In a pinch we "eyeba;;" the stick from above and error on the side of the defender.

I think a combination of cutting my other two ranger rulers and using the string from your idea DoubleNot7 would be a way to go.

Thanks for the advice!

If the scrum isn't too too bad, we usually move the blocking ship away using a move template, but place an empty base where the ship actually is. that way you have the base representing the space without the actual ship getting bumped by your hand and the range ruler. We move the ship back obviously. If i had 3 starter kits, i would prob chop my ranger rules up too, if for nothing else but easier storage...

Place the 1 Straight template along side of the blocking model's base and then move the blocking ship out of the way. Once you're done measuring you just put the ship back next to the movement template.

Trick a guy locally came up with for moving ships out of the way - use a stress token. It's handy, small, and it fits perfectly between the movement guides.

To the original question, if we've got a mess I usually keep the ruler vertical, as was originally suggested, and slide it in from the back of one ship towards the other. You can usually get pretty close, since the only real problem will be hitting pegs. And if it's that close, move stuff out of the way.
