Species Creation

By Doogan, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm trying to get my wife wanting to participate in a game. She has shown some interest when I told her she could be a wookie, but this was immediately followed by:

"Can I be one of those small furry things?"

"An Ewok"

"Yeah one of those."

I would imagine this has already been discussed someone and if it has I would appricate a link the the thread. My question is has any created a species profile for an Ewok or am I best suiting just making that myself.

There is a menagerie file out there on the Resource page, but I don't have the link off hand. It absolutely has those little cannibal buggers.

Maybe, but I'd doubt it. Ewoks dont really make sense to be smugglers/bounty hunters/etc as the other races in EotE. Ewoks arent really know for smuggling/traveling outside of Endor, since they are a relatively primitive race. I suppose you could make a profile for them, but if I were you I would discourage this, since it could cause odd story issues.

I'm not so worried about odd story issues. As a GM I try to be open to the random things a party may want. If playing an Ewok would get my wife to sit down and at least give the game a shot then it would be worth it.

Characters in EotE don't just have to be snugglers/bouty hunters/etc. The explorer class would work pretty well for these little furry guys. I wouldn't discourage her being an ewok if that is what she really wants to do.

Yes I kind of visioned this character maybe taking on a specialiation of a doctor or something.

That is the one I couldn't think of! Thanks

You're welcome!

They are omnivores, not cannibals. Last I checked we don't see them eating other Ewoks and so they don't fit into the classification of cannibalism.

True...you are technically correct (the best kind of correct). I was thinking more as in eating another Sentient race. I guess I have a wider definition than most.

WHOA! I think I owe you a beer for this link. It's great how helpful this community is.

If I had a new player who really wanted to play an Ewok/Jawa/Tusken Raider/Gungan/Sapient Plant/Ugnaught. I would do my best to make it possible. Odd stories can still be fun, and only need to be as odd as the GM and other players want them to be.

It could even be "normal" in your Star Wars to see Ewoks hanging around the local spaceport bar.

There's a perfectly well-developed Ewok smuggler named Tarfang in the Expanded Universe. Although it's post-RotJ, he decided to leave his planet and became involved in criminal endeavors. Nothing wrong with a species playing "against type." In fact, BECAUSE the Ewoks are so isolated during the EotE era, it would make sense that a lone Ewok might be involved in more "fringe" endeavors. Since Endor is not a commonly visited stop, it's likely that he or she would have gotten off-planet through a non-standard method (eg, hopping on a pirate or smuggler ship that uses Endor as a safehouse, being kidnapped by slavers and taken off-world, partnering up with an explorer or big game hunter who investigates Endor for personal reasons...).

Further, just because a species is generally viewed a certain way doesn't mean that every member of the species falls into those parameters. Writers often create characters against type -- John Jackson Miller intentionally does this (eg, a Trandoshan who is a craven shipjacker rather than a violent thug like most of his species, or a pair of Ithorians, normally a peaceful species, who are nasty bounty hunters).

An Ewok Imperial agent makes no sense. An Ewok "fringer" makes a ton of sense.

Everyone's game doesn't have to fit within the established bounds of Star Wars "sense." If a group is trying to keep things dressed up "properly" then an Ewok would likely not even show up in the queue.

My little brother made an Ewok bounty hunter in power armor when we were kids playing WEG d6. Yeah, it makes us both shake our heads and cringe to even think about it now, but when he was 8 and I was 12? It was good fun romping through the wastes of Tatooine.

I say that if a whole party of Ewoks forming a surf gang on Mon Calamari really gets someone's fun flowing, then have at it. The EU and canon thought police will rage and fume at their keyboards when they get wind of it, but as long as people are having a blast playing star wars? Or convinces someone to give Edge of the Empire a try? Go bonkers with your Ewok Force Sensitive Exile / Politico

I think the greatest disservice done to Ewoks was their depiction in RotJ. They seemed too soft and fuzzy, their teeth, that we did see did not scream omnivore, I remember large flat teeth that said herbivore. They were dumpy and looked ridiculous when they moved. I've seen many pictures since then online that certainly give the Ewoks a more fierce, tribal, omnivorous, survivalist look, and I like it. Still can't stand the furry buggers (lol) but those pictures sure look like creatures that could overwhelm a platoon of Stormtroopers.

I think Ewoks as depicted in RotJ owe a LOT to H Beam Piper's Little Fuzzy. Short, furry, smart, but technologically primitive. I could see Ewoks taking to adventure on the Fringe very readily.

Maybe a ship landed on Endor and an Ewok stowed away, or simply got stuck when he ship lifted off with the furry little savage still aboard. Instant justification for Ewok character.

I don't recall the Species Menagerie, but old WEG stated that Ewok PC's were some of the characters that couldn't start with any training in technological areas. Blasters, droid repair, such like that. I think it could be a great way to tech down a character and show their unfamiliarity to all things "futuristic". Plus, think how much fun it will be to trade in your stone spear for a vibro-spear!

E

I am wondering if anyone is willing to continue this endeavor and accept others with contributions. I think this could become the "Ultimate Alien Anthology" of the Edge of the Empire system, a resource for the devs to tweak as needed for later resources.

Are there any particular "rules" people are using for conversions (from RCR d20 or Saga Edition, for instance)?

I shall be following this post and contributing as able. For my first species, I will work on the Besalisk.

If eating a sentient makes you a cannibal, then every human on this planet that eats meat is a cannibal. Most animals are sentient and we consume them.

Ewok bounty hunters are canon: Treek .

And I'm glad there are no Yuuzhan Vong in the menagerie (even though I know EotE is too early in the timeline for them to show up).

I think I recall that in the "Darth Plagueis" novel, by the time of the destruction of the first Death Star, the one around the moon of Endor was already under construction. It's also likely that Imperial scientists would have collected specimens of the ewoks for study. Perhaps raiders hit the cargo ship contracted to take those ewoks to Coruscant? Maybe this ewok was rescued from a lab on a different world?

I tend to agree with the comment that a new ewok character probably shouldn't start with technical skills. Maybe one option could be that, regardless of the profession and specialization they have to start with, they get melee, survivalist, medicine and athletics as the "bonus career skills" they have to pick their two extras from. These don't replace the real "bonus career skills" that come from their career, but they have to pick from these 4 low-tech ones during character creation. Ones they don't select don't remain bonus career skills beyond character creation (unless the player selects a career that includes some of them), but the two they do select can be trained up later as if they were career skills. This would help offset the technical skills not available during character creation. This could potentially even be an option for other characters who want to be from a low-tech world.

Anyway, assuming the second Death Star is under construction, at some point if this ewok crosses paths with a Rebel, it might just happen to mention "You know that big space thing that Skywalker guy destroyed? There's one over my home too." Maybe it's a tip from this ewok that puts the Bothans on the hunt for it? It would be a way tie your adventures into the trilogy, in a small way (pardon the pun).

I just want to say there is absolutely no reason why someone shouldn't be able to be an Ewok from a narrative stand-point.

Yes, most Ewoks stick to their planet. But the heroes aren't most anybody . They are heroes (or villains).

Moreover, there is at least one Ewok Bounty Hunter in the expanded universe (a companion character in the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic).

I think if you have someone who wants to be an Ewok, definitely seek out or make rules for being an Ewok, and then work with your player to determine how this exceptional Ewok became a space-faring Ewok. It could even be part of the first session or two--have your players visit Endor, and pick up a stowaway!

I also don't agree with any kind of special restrictions for such a character (although an Ewok would have a silhouette of 0 and that might come into play). If you want to make an Ewok Technician, do it! Then build a background reason for how that happened. Be that Ewok that gets shunned from the village, or is revered for "magical" powers, be the unheard of Ewok who tinkers with machines. Why not?

In the world of creative writing, and I would say game design, any rule can be broken with good reason.

Sure you're not thinking of the bounty hunter companion that is a jawa?

That being said, I agree that there can always be a reason for any race. Player characters, like characters in a novel should be unique. Whether because their race is rarely seen or because their race rarely takes a certain profession. There should be little to constrain anyones imagination.

I also think it would be cool to have an entire player group made up of small chracter races. Dwarf human, ewok, jawa, toydarian, etc.
