Protective and/or hindrance terrain some day ?

By Robin13, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Perhaps is it my wargaming background, but I would be interested in the creation of new terrains, which offer some protection and/or hindrance effects.

Examples :

- Brush square : a figure in rush square recieves one additional Shield protection.
Brush counts as two squares if LOS is traced through it (including if it just touches the corner).

- Arrow slit (square side): non close combat through an arrow slit. Firing through an arrow slit is affected the following ways : if the arrow slit side is part of the square of the firer, no effect.

If firer is at 2+ squares from the arrow slit, he only can target the figure in the square which the arrow slit is part of. Such a ranged attack needs 3 more range than usual and the defender throws one more gray die.

- Swamp terrain: entry cost is 3 MP. Close combat from swamp terrain may not use surges. A figure in a swamp square recieves one additional Shield protection.

Swamp counts as two squares if LOS is traced through it (including if it just touches the corner).

Just ideas...

I believe that if some module develops forest terrain or "castle/urban" terrain, it could include such elements.

cool idea but i do not think there will be created such terains in future.

Time will tell, I suppose. Labyrinth of Ruin added new overgrowth and elevation "terrain" which plays with adjacency in some interesting ways.

the Arrow Slit idea is cool, although it seems a bit situational to me. Brush and Swamp are both good stuff, and Trollfens would be the perfect place to put them (*wink wink* FFG!)

Overgrowth, in LoR, blocks LoS, but can be passed through with on additional movement point or taken down by using an action (like a door).

Elevation, also in LoR, in interesting. It's a dotted red line. This means one cannot pass through it, you must go around, but you may attack adjacent figures. Adjacent figure (on opposite side of the elevation) gets one additional black dice to it's pool UNLESS the monster has reach. I LOVE this new addition. I am glad it was added.

I took the arrow slit idea from Dungeon Twister.

My suggestions do rely upon what I saw of the new terrain rules introduced in LoR, so one could expect some additional terrains further on.

I love the swamp idea. After reading LoR, there is one quest that kind of has that feel, but not as complex. I would like to see terrain that was more then cave, plains, or inside. *shrugs* sounds fun. More verity.

I know D1 had some ocean quests. I am not sure how that would work, but it sounds fun. Maybe that's the ocean in my blood saying that.

One also could imagine "artificial/temporary terrain" such as smoke, fog or deep darkness, which could hinder sight - or even disallow ranged combat - and have an effect upon movement.

Of course, a quest's special rule can introduce such elements.

The Shadow Dragon's ability in itself introduces some hindrance for any adjacent figure (I presume it is a sort of tenebrous aura that makes combat more difficult).

One could also have obstacles that prevent even flying creatures from crossing them (especially in "inside" situations, where I find strange that a flying creature still can pass through, say, a pillar that reaches up to the cealing).

In D1 there was an elevated terrain. When attacking from elevation to normal you gain +1 heart and +1 range, if you attack from normal to elevation you get the same as minus. This is more or less is introduced in LoR.

Also was a "Fog", blocks line of sight but not movements. If combined with Wiz-War sandstorm it could be fun and unpredictable tile. "Fog" - block line of sight but not movement, when figure trying to move out of a fog tile roll a 1d4 to determine in which direction it is moves. But since there is no ordinary dices in D2 it is hard to imagine.

Also in D1 was tiles in which you got a "Shadowcloak" status or ability which means "A figure with the Shadowcloak ability is only affected by attacks made by adjacent figures. The figure does not suffer any wounds or effects from attacks originating farther than one space away."

In D2 there is no terrain tokens, so any terrain can be specified in quest's special rules. You can make a tile more like Shadow dragon's shadow ability (when a figure on a Dark Fields tile is attacked attacker must spend surge or attack is considered as a miss).

Your only limit is your imagination.

It's sort of a not entirely ni line with the topic, but..

I would like to see more variety, especially in dungeon tiles.

We have forest tiles, we'll have jungle tiles with Trollfens, but the dungeon ones are all the same pretty much, the same goes for corridors.

So what about caves, for example? In the base there's only like one cave tile.. I would be nice to see some arctic caves or even arctic outdoor areas. What about some underground buildings or cave camps? or maybe some graveyard'y outdoor areas.

dungeon tiles really could see some improvements in regards to variety, don't you all think?

There are at least one tile for most of the things you are talking about and depending on the quest, many of those quests with those tiles will have spacial events with them. Such as Frozen Spire, depending on the first encounter will cause the caves to cause heroes trouble. Most of the time if the grave yard is added, Zombies are used.

Not that I wouldn't like to see more! I would love to see a forest! That would be super fun. Swamps, mountains and the like would be awesome as well!
