Avatars?

By Ringskipper, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

What are the chances that Avatars from the first edition will pop up in the second edition? I've never played the first edition, but it seems like something that would spice up being the Overlord, in my opinion.

What are those "Avatars"?

They are avatars chosen by the Overlord player at the beginning of a campaign... it's basically the Overlord personified as a monster, who can gain bonuses and whatnot.

As an overlord player, I always feel kind of envious that the heroes get to select a character that portrays them, while the overlord is just a being in shadows. It'd be really cool to see these pop up again.

That would be awesome! Some more punch for the OL and maybe a bit more fun for him.

I like playing the OL but after moving monsters and playing cards I feel there's much more I could do with my evilness!

Very and very unlikely. In D1 each Avatar had it's own lieutenants, upgrades, final quest map with it's own set of rules for that map and for final battle in particular. In D2 creating a set of Avatars will force creating a set of final quests and OL decks unique for each Avatar. RIght now uniqueness of OL represents by OL cards that you choose to add to your deck and physical form of Baron Zachareth in "The Shadow Rune", Valyndra in "Lair of Tha Wyrm" and Ariad in "Labyrinth of Ruin" campaigns. With replayability we have right now in D2 Avatars does not worth it in my opinion.

What you can do, is to create a deck that heroes will be afraid of, to choose a monsters, that will not only slice heroes like hot butter, but will fear them off of dungeon and to play without mistakes to make heroes suffer every second they spent in your dungeons.

For me it is more hard to achieve and more interesting than was in D1.

Good points. I'm a new OL and since I played lots of games as a Hero I found that the OL missed something. But like you say, it's the OL dungeon and one should play to reflect that!

I think D2e already has Avatars, but the OL has to choose the campaign to get a different Avatar. That is what Baran Zacareth is basically in the base campaign.

Wow... Kind of makes me want to pick up D1 now and check it out!

I did get a littte jealous, so I made myself an avatar: http://papertulipstudio.tumblr.com/image/54011169685

I ended up drawing my friends as their characters as well. It's something I enjoy doing.

Thank you for the explanations. :)
